How far can I get on one battery charge? To answer this question, InsideEVs Italy tests a whole bunch of electric cars every year. A dozen long-haul models were tested this year – models with more than 70 kWh of battery capacity.
12 electric cars were tested, some of which differ significantly in terms of body shape, price and performance. They cannot be directly compared with one another, but the results should be interesting for many buyers:

Strongly varying proportions
As every year, we tested the electric cars in real traffic on the Grande Raccordo Anulare (A90). The ring road goes around Rome and of course the traffic density and speed vary considerably. Sometimes you reach the speed limit, then you have to brake again and accelerate again.
In contrast to a test at constant speed, not only the efficiency of the drive but also the recuperation is tested here. The test was carried out on a rainy day at temperatures between 11 and 14 degrees. Some vehicles were fitted with M + S tires, others with large wheels.
The test started at 11:30 am, we went counter-clockwise; one lap on the motorway ring is 68.2 km long. All vehicles were driven in normal mode, i.e. neither eco nor sport mode. We always set the air conditioning to 22 degrees.
The target travel speed was 130 km / h, in tunnels it was 110 km / h. We tried to follow the flowing traffic, we tried to avoid strong acceleration and braking. When a remaining charge of 5 percent was reached, the car left the GRA to go to the nearest charging station and collect the data recorded by the on-board computer.

The results came about through a comparison between manual measurements, the display of the on-board computer and the measurements of our software partner GeoTab, which tracked the vehicles via satellite and recorded the data from the OBD unit.

The car that came the furthest in the test is the BMW iX with 6.1 laps or 416 km. The first car that had to be charged is the Volvo XC40, which did 4.2 laps or 285 km. On average, the ranges we determined were a third below the official WLTP values.

The power consumption is just as interesting as the range. This depends on the one hand on the weight and aerodynamics of the vehicle, but also on the performance. The Tesla Model Y was the most economical in terms of energy in the test, it got by with 17.4 kWh / 100 km. At the other end of the scale is the Mercedes EQS 580 4Matic with 26.0 kWh / 100 km.
