Driving report Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA / GTAM: A true power package – that brings the Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA with it

  • Site author Joaquim Oliveira

The new Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA is a tribute to the original model from 1965 and wants to set completely new standards in the segment of sporty mid -class elements. In addition to driving fun, the price truly also takes your breath away.

It is the countless attempt to let Alfa Romeo build on his heyday again. A lot of work for brand CEO Jean-Phillipe Imparato, who is aware that it will not be an easy thing again to make Alfa Romeo what all expect from the Stellantis offshoot. “Alfa has all the prerequisites for becoming the global premium brand of the Stelltis Group", insured Jean-Phillipe Imparato with a lot of confidence. Have you heard everything before – again and again. It is worth remembering what Giulia meant for Alfa Romeo. It appeared in 2016 to increase the dynamic competence of Italian cars again with the well -known symbiosis of front engine and rear -wheel drive, which already distinguished the original model from 1962. Endless commercial failures such as Brera, Spider, 159 or the entry -level model Mito ensured that Alfa Romeo parked where they are just 50.000 vehicles sold do not belong to themselves per year. And now the traditional brand brings two racers with the Giulia GTA and GTAM, which themselves are supposed to scare BMW M3, Audi RS4 or Mercedes AMG C63.

The 4.67 -meter -long Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA still seduces through the filigree face with triangular shield, which serves as a radiator grille, flanked by slim headlights and an almost wasteful fusion of concave and convex forms. Visually, the GTA version borders away from its tame brothers through the usual widening of the body and carbon fiber elements. You can immediately feel that the four-door man appears even more muscular than the already trained Quadrifoglio model and notices the lush carbon fiber profiles in the front air inlets that bring ten percent more air flow to engine cooling and reduce the weight of the car. During the even sharper GTAM, door panels made of composite materials, lighter suspension springs, sports seats and a polycarbonate rear window ensured a high-tech bacon cure, as is otherwise only known from real touring cars. The two sports versions lost weight around 25 (Giulia GTA) or 100 kilograms (Giulia GTAM).

Sprints up to 300 km/h

The former family sedans appear with the rear diffuser, central titanium end pipes with Akrapovic lettering, carbon ceramic brakes, huge rear wing and 20-inch racing tire of the Michelin Pilot Cup 2 with central racing cars that turned briefly on the way to the boxing engine are. The fine-tuning of the chassis also did the in-house Formula 1 pilots Antonio Giovanazzi and Kimi Raikkonen. What else should go wrong? Also because the sports trim inside with Alcantara fittings board and well-contoured racing seats fits: Too bad that the materials for a vehicle of the 180.000 euro league are just as moderate as image screening or navigation system, which is more important today than ever. For this you have a real family sedan with a little tamer Giulia GTA with space for four people and 480 liters of luggage, which can be transported through the landscape at a top speed of 300 km/h.

Compared to the normal Alfa Romeo Giulia Q, there was a performance lookout by 30 to 540 hp. None in this league offers more and even the new BMW M3 can only beat the Italian (600 Nm) with its 650 Nm maximum torque in this category. Top speed, performance and sportiness on the racetrack – here the Giulia sets up his crown of the German competition. In addition to the changed coordination, the high-tech entitlement underline new connecting rods and two changed oil nozzles for better lubrication.

Does not come close to the competition

Incidentally, the Alfa Romeo weighs 100 to 240 kilograms less than the potent mid -range competition, which is extremely beneficial for the dynamics, especially on the racetrack. So he also takes a few painful tenths at the image spurt 0 at the image spurt 0 and crack the brand in 3.6 and 3.8 seconds. The choice of gears takes over an eight -stage automatic transmission from ZF, which sees its switching processes influenced by the selection of the different driving modes. In the race program, the corridors are cutting in just 150 milliseconds to the next level. Pleasantly handy: the aluminum switched pedals on the precise control wheel. The package fits, but the Alfa does not come close to the quality of the BMW or Porsche switching boxes.

The chassis with its four driving modes is tight, sporty or even hard. The Renntrimm, which switches off the emergency anchors completely, is only something for very experienced pilots on the street and race track. The rear twitches constantly and as wildly as the tail of a dog, who is happily waiting for his owner. So you are better in the medium driving programs like in Dynamic and yet faster than any other. A small drift in the curve is still there with a rest of the rescue anchors, while the sporty chassis with its track widening (2.5 cm in front and 5 cm) offers thanks to the warm sports tires best grip and surprisingly high residual comfort.

A stately price

If you don’t want to go to the race track regularly, the Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA is better served. On locked courses such as in Balocco, Nardo or Vallelunga, the subsequent GTAM version wins 3.0 to 4.7 seconds per round in contrast to the normal Q model-more than half eternity for racing drivers. The price leaves your breath, because with 173.000 euros is the Alfa Romeo GTA (GTAM: 178.000 euros) almost twice as expensive as the normal Giulia Q or the even more perfect BMW M3 Competition. The decision is easier than expected, even if the sharp Northern Italian is a great fun maker on the race track, especially on the racetrack. This is probably the case with only a few eccentric multimillion dollar car collectors for the 500 vehicles produced.

  1. Wait….
….The potent competition from Ingoldstadt, Munich and Stuttgart will hardly be that … ….The potent competition from Ingoldstadt, Munich and Stuttgart will hardly get a tremor. That was the case in the clerk and will not change so quickly. Regardless of the price that is rather secondary in this league. Who should seriously switch from the top dogs to such an exotic ??? Only absolute Alfa fans drive something like that and they just need that "Change" to…there are so many ???

  2. No, there is definitely no
People like a Mr. Rupp (comment below) are rare and become less. Because it is probably a lot of suffering if you like him Alfa Romeo as "admired brand" describes. But the fact is, the things hardly anyone wants to have, because at most a second -class. The sales figures speak a clear language. Obviously just not everyone wants to admit.

  3. How please, Mr. Rupp?
I am not an Alfa opponent at all, I simply recognize the facts. Everything I wrote is true. Sorry, if you don’t want to see reality, please, your thing. That’s why they don’t have to assume strange stuff. And no, I never was from Alfa "nibbled" or dismiss. Can’t happen to me because I wouldn’t hire on such a falling ship.
