Because of the lockdown, many Germans drive less car than usual. This already had an impact on breakdown statistics in 2020, show data from the ADAC: Schlappe Batteries left many cars lying down. This also applies to electric cars – but differently than you think.

Almost every second breakdown, to which the "Yellow angel" had to move out of the ADAC, was due to a discharged or defective starter battery. This is shown by the current ADAC breakdown statistics that site is present. Around 3.4 million (2019: 3.8 million.) Sometimes the street watch and mobility partners of the ADAC were in the first "Corona year" On the way. So the number of missions has decreased, which can be explained by the bans on movement during the first lockdowns in Germany.

More battery breakdowns, fewer tire places

"Overall, the proportion of battery failures in all breakdown rose from 41.8 percent in the previous year to 46.3 percent. Reason: In these months in the lockdown, many vehicles were little or hardly moved. The opposite shows the tire breakdowns. These have decreased significantly in the Lockdown months", So the ADAC. Car batteries are loaded during the trip via the generator (alternator) of the car; If the car is too long, the batteries sometimes no longer have a juice.

Incidentally, defects in the starter battery were Even with electric cars in 54 percent of cases, the breakdown of the breakdown – And thus even more than with petrol or diesel vehicles. You have to know that every electric car has two batteries: a large battery, mostly with lithium-ion technology, as a traction battery, but also a normal 12 volt battery as a starter battery. There are several reasons for that. On the one hand, the circuit of the traction battery is only closed for driving, so that a starter battery is used to unlock the doors using a central locking and other functions. And if the e-car goes out entirely the juice for driving, the small battery ensures that things like light and warning indicators work for a while.

E-car technology rarely a breakdown reason

Defects on the actual battery, on the other hand, were rarely a problem with the electric car. According to ADAC, the problems were only in 4.4 percent of the trap "Electric car-specific", So were caused by the drive battery, the electric motor or the loading technique in the vehicle. Seen in this way, even e-cars are not free of breakdowns, but rarely because of their drive. However, the ADAC points out that this result is only an intermediate score and is not yet sufficient to assess the long-term suitability of the vehicles. "The stock of electric cars on German roads is currently much younger than that of conventional vehicles. The ADAC experts expect that wear and aging-related breakdowns of e-cars will increase in the next few years", So the automobile club.

  1. battery empty
Can you just load the electric car to which the battery is empty with the help of … You can simply charge the electric car to which the battery is empty, with the help of cable from one car to the other? Because with a normal battery it goes with the verben within 1 minute. Start, drive or let it run for 30 minutes and you’re done. No matter, 2nd place for me is water hoses in the traffic jam on the Autobahn.

  2. First of all, great praise for the yellow angels…
I have been in the ADAC myself for over 10 years, and when I had a breakdown, then we have always helped excellently when the yellow angels and no repairs. The yellow angel drivers are very well trained and from the subject, and also have OBD2 reading devices with them, and can carry out an error diagnosis in 99% of all cases. So I personally as a driver and frequent driver (about 40 to 50.000 km per year) can really only recommend the ADAC, and I have already recommended it to the Shell petrol stations, and also a cent discount per liter with my ADAC member card with my ADAC membership card with my ADAC member card.

  3. Be sure to note…..
If the starter battery is completely dead, you can open the driver’s door using an emergency key, but you can no longer get to the starting aid cable in the electronically locked trunk. Only one thing helps: store either the ADAC or start aid cable in the interior. And by the way, the voltage drops under 5Volt, then the sensors also report all possible defects to the display.

  4. Well earlier …..
If you pull the ignition key, no more electricity, or just that for the clock. Today everything (on -board computer, alarm system, central locking, emergency alarm, spy software for insurance, manufacturer and EU and much more) must also be supplied at a standstill and sucks the battery empty. 2 or 3 Where there was a standstill because of a BW exercise, there was no problem in the past, even my 92 Corolla did nothing until the end of last year 1 where there was nothing. With my current 05er fiesta 1 where it is already noticeable. I’m curious to see if he will start for a weekly shopping trip tomorrow. And with such a "burden" the batteries of an electric car will not last long. However, I can also get a starter battery by bus in the next hardware store or let it send me.
