The ADAC has published the eagerly awaited breakdown statistics for 2009. The big winners are German brands, and Mercedes in particular was convincing last year. The Japanese, on the other hand, are only in the midfield, where they are still ahead of Opel and Ford. Citroën managed a surprise.
D.he German cars have their quality advantage in the annual ADAC breakdown statistics held. Mercedes in particular shone in 2009. Citroën also made a leap forward. Last year, German manufacturers took first place in six of the eight vehicle classes evaluated.
The front runner is Mercedes with three first places. Only in the category of microcars and small vans is a French manufacturer leading with Citroën. However, not all German manufacturers are equally good: According to statistics, Ford and Opel continue to have problems with reliability. The Japanese competition is in the middle of the field. reaches mediocrity.
As the most puncture-proof brand, Mercedes set the standards in 2009: with the B-Class, the C-Class and the SLK, victories were achieved in three car categories. In addition, the CLK came second in the sports cars / convertibles and the A-Class came fourth in the compacts – one place ahead of the bestseller VW Golf.
In 2009, Citroën was able to clinch victory in two categories: the C1 won the smallest car category and the C4 Picasso won the small van category. As with its identical siblings Toyota Aygo and Peugeot 107, the drivers of the four-seater rarely had to use the breakdown service of the automobile club in 2009. As in the previous year, the BMW X3 won the off-road vehicle category, while BMW took first place with the Mini drive into the small cars. Among the large vans, the old VW Sharan that was about to be replaced was again the most reliable.
In 40.8 percent of the cases, the main cause of breakdowns was problems with the battery or the vehicle electrics, followed by the ignition system with 10.8 percent.
The car club has published its annual breakdown statistics since 1978. This year 2.04 million breakdowns were evaluated, to which the ADAC was called in 2009. Only cars that are one to six years old and have at least 10,000 registrations in at least one of these years and at least 7,000 in the others are taken into account for the breakdown statistics. According to ADAC, the different mileages of the individual model series within the class are compensated for by a correction factor.
In addition, only technical defects are included in the assessment. Self-inflicted mishaps such as breaking down due to an empty tank are not taken into account.
