These rules of conduct must be known to novice drivers
Just having a driver’s license does not make novice drivers safe and secure.

In Germany, 130,000 people get their driving license every year. But the “rag” does not turn them into experienced drivers. It is therefore important for novice drivers to know the rights.
How do I behave during a traffic control?
W.During a traffic control, young drivers should remain calm at all times and not rashly comment on any allegations. There is a certain obligation to provide information, but this is limited to personal details and the issuing of the vehicle and driver’s license.
“There is no requirement to provide more extensive information. Nobody is obliged to incriminate themselves ", explains traffic attorney Daniela Mielchen from the working group traffic law of the German bar association (DAV).
Alcohol and drugs behind the wheel
There is an absolute ban on alcohol at the wheel for novice drivers. If a young driver with alcohol in his blood ends up in a traffic stop, the following also applies in this case: silence is golden.
Anyone who willingly provides information about their own drinking behavior during the control process must expect disadvantages with regard to the level of the penalty.
Novice drivers should not answer any questions without first consulting a traffic attorney. At least that is the advice of the traffic law working group of the German Lawyers’ Association.
Most common causes of accidents among novice drivers
According to a study by the Federal Statistical Office, excessive speed is the most common cause of accidents among young car drivers (19 percent). 11.6 percent of accidents among 18- to 24-year-olds are caused by errors in distance, 11.1 percent by mistakes when turning and turning, 10.6 percent by disregarding the right of way and 4.2 percent by alcohol consumption.
What to do after an accident?
Anyone who has suffered an accident should remain calm and, as far as possible, take photos of what happened, speak to witnesses, write down their addresses and the course of the accident and call the police. Even in such a situation, it can’t hurt to contact a traffic attorney. Frank-Roland Hillmann, specialist lawyer for traffic law: “Insurance companies only pay for the bare minimum. Without advice, those affected often have to bear considerable costs, and claims are often not paid at all. "
What insurance for the motorist?
For novice drivers, it is very advisable to have general liability insurance to conclude or to clarify whether there is insurance coverage through the parents. Young drivers should also never drive someone else’s vehicle that does not have fully comprehensive insurance.
If a driver license holder takes a trip in the car of his friend’s parents and is responsible for an accident, he is solely liable for the damage. General liability insurance does not apply in this case either. Drivers without legal protection insurance often have great difficulties in enforcing their claims against the insurance of the opponent.
Traffic violations during the probationary period
During the probationary period, the first two years after the driving test, special rules apply to novice drivers. Significant traffic violations can range from arranging an advanced seminar and extending the probationary period to four years to providing advice on traffic psychology or even withdrawing your temporary driving license.
Speeding, violations of right of way, serious technical defects in the vehicle or alcohol and drugs behind the wheel are examples of major traffic violations and are punished with a fine of at least 40 euros and mandatory participation in an advanced seminar.
