The German battery manufacturer Akasol has introduced the third generation of its battery systems manufactured in series production. The new Akasystem 9 AKM 150 CYC has the highest energy density available on the market according to the company. Thus, the system is especially suitable for fully electrical long-range applications such as coaches or trucks. A system has a nominal energy of just under 100 kWh and can be scaled as needed with multiple systems as needed. The ultra-high energy battery system is manufactured from 2022 in Gigafactory 1 in Darmstadt.

The new system with a nominal energy of 98 kWh and a continuous load rate of 1 c maximizing the range of up to 50 percent compared to conventional systems on the market with simultaneous HPC capability. For example, overnight through fast load capacity and loading operations for longer service life, the use of the system can be flexibly designed and the life of the battery cells can be optimized. A lifetime of up to 4000 charging cycles is achieved, which makes the lithium-ion battery system a very long-lasting system.

The active liquid cooling with a water-glycol mixture as well as the good thermal insulation of the battery system enable the cells to operate the ideal temperature range and to achieve a connected optimization of performance with lower aging. The system design includes a variety of security features, such as two separate CPU cores for increasing reliability. The AKAS system 9 AKM 150 CYC also has the protection classes IP67 and IP6K9K, high fire protection and is developed according to the Industry standard ISO 26262.

Through the use of battery cells in the 21700 standard format, Akasol benefits from the independent development of the cells from the battery system. This also benefits future products, so the energy density can be continuously increased without adaptation of system architecture in the coming years. In addition to the increase in efficiency and cost savings, the use of standard cells also allows high availability of battery cells through various manufacturers with global production sites.

The highly automated and fully crosslinked production in Gigafactory 1 in Darmstadt already has over 1 GWh of installed production capacity and is increased to 2.5 GWh over the course of 2022. Depending on customer requirements, it can be extended to 5 GWh in Darmstadt in the future. In Hazel Park, an Akasol plant in the US, the production capacity is increased by 2023 to 2 GWh. In the near future, the company can significantly increase the production of lithium-ion battery systems for commercial vehicles on both continents.
