Another win of the America’s Cup for Oracle is in jeopardy. The favorite manipulated the material. And now has to face a huge burden against challengers New Zealand.
Titel defender Oracle Team USA received a drastic penalty shortly before the start of the 34th America’s Cup. The international cup jury imposed a deduction of two points on the sailing team for the final for material manipulation.
The team of multi-billionaire Larry Ellison has to play in the best-of-17 series against Team New Zealand thus win at least eleven races, the New Zealanders only nine.
The penalty is considered to be one of the toughest in the 162-year history of the America’s Cup. In addition, three crew members were banned and a fine of $ 250,000 (approx. 190,000 euros) was imposed.
Weight manipulation
The US team had, according to the judgment, manipulated at least one catamaran during the America‘s Cup World Series in 2012 by adding weight. The penalty was “outrageous” and “unprecedented,” said Oracle Sporting Director Russell Coutts: “But it is what it is. Now we just have to win eleven instead of nine races. "
The jury was convinced that “each of the modifications served the purpose of increasing performance. Whether the performance was really improved in the end is not relevant. The changes were small, but small changes can be decisive at this top level. "
The US team has therefore damaged the image of the America’s Cup.
