The Ferrari 288 GTO is the hottest investment tip

According to the Oldtimer Index, 2014 was a good year for classic vehicles to increase in value. The prices rose by a good 15 percent. However, some sports cars can be a tricky investment.
D.he price increase for classic automobiles slowed down significantly in the past year. The HAGI-TOP index, in which 50 representative historic cars are listed, grew by 15.84 percent in 2014. That was around 30 percent less growth than in the record year 2013. That speaks for a healthy market development.
Cars can still be comparatively profitable as investment objects. As in previous years, it can be seen that different market segments, brands and models also differ in their performance. The HAGI-P index, which measures 14 classic Porsches, increased by 32.06 percent, twice as fast as the overall market.
Increased demand for younger models can be observed here, which are increasingly coming into the hands of collectors. The Porsche 959, one of the most complex cars ever built in Zuffenhausen, is approaching the one million euro mark. Interested parties should bear in mind, however, that the complex technology can result in very high follow-up costs. Simple maintenance work quickly adds up to 30,000 to 40,000 euros.
Porsche brought the 959 onto the market primarily as a technology carrier. The sports car was supposed to prove the superiority of the Stuttgart rally at the Paris – Dakar rally. Between 1987 and 1988 around 290 rear-engined cars based on the 911 SC were built.
Porsche Carerra GT misses the target
The first 200 pieces of the 450 hp six-cylinder, which reached a top speed of 317 km / h, were sold for 420,000 marks each when it was presented at the IAA 1987. A factory reproduction of eight vehicles in 1992 found buyers for 745,000 marks each.

The first Porsche 911s were difficult to drive. The 1965 model year was also nicknamed the short swing arm. You need patience if you are one of the between 1964 and the factory holidays… Wants to acquire the car manufactured in 1965. The earlier the year of manufacture and the lower the chassis number, the more expensive it will be. Fans now pay up to half a million euros for the "Ur-11er".

The Porsche Carrera GT, on the other hand, achieved its original new price (just under half a million euros), which narrowly missed its production target of 1,500 units between 2003 and 2006. The V-10 cylinder was originally intended for use at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Wendelin Wiedeking, the Porsche boss at the time, said the project was too expensive. The lack of racing history was rather detrimental to sales of the car, which at the time cost 450,000 euros.
The Mercedes SLR by McLaren could prove to be an insider tip. Good examples of the sports car produced by the English Formula 1 racing team from 2003 to 2009 are traded for around 200,000 euros. For this you get an English car with a star and 626 hp, which accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.8 seconds.
The car with the butterfly doors reminiscent of the legendary 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe was only built 2157 times. Originally 3500 cars were planned. That’s good for performance. The rarer a car is, the higher its potential. This becomes clear when you compare the SLR with its successor, the AMG SLS, which was manufactured around 10,000 times between 2010 and 2014.
Throttled Mercedes SL in the USA
2014 was the year in which the Mercedes SL, which was built from 1972 to 1989, increasingly became the focus of buyers. The R107 had shaped the streetscape of the red-light districts in the 1980s. Now the so-called triple A customers are increasingly interested in him: doctors, pharmacists, lawyers.

The performance of the past few years could continue due to the strong interest despite the high production numbers and the long manufacturing period. The SL built for the German market are valued more highly than the 560 SL, which was produced almost 50,000 times only for the USA and was originally supplied with double headlights and thick bumpers.
Under the sheet metal there is simpler engines and simpler vehicle technology because of the 55-mile speed limit that was common at the time compared to the European models. There is particular demand for the late 300 SL six-cylinder and the 500 SL with around 240 hp and first delivery in Europe, which is already well over 50,000 euros.
The coupes of this series, which were only produced until 1982, such as the 450 SLC 5.0, which achieved racing fame through rally victories and are still cheaper than the open-top versions, remain an insider tip: for around 25,000 to 30,000 euros.
The Mercedes-Benz Classic Index by HAGI showed an above-average increase in the value of the brand at 13.94 percent, which has grown by just under 10 percent annually on the long-term average since 1980. Classic Mercedes-Benz vehicles, even beyond the 300 SL Gullwing from 1955, are a solid investment that combines healthy returns with low volatility.
Underrated muscle cars
In addition to the 300 SL, which dominates the overall market, almost all models from the early supercharged models to the special model for the German Touring Car Championship, the 190 E 2.5 16 v EVO II, remain in demand.

There were larger fluctuations at Ferrari. The HAGI-F index, which takes 12 cars from Maranello into account, increased by 17.53 percent in 2014 after more than 60 percent in the previous year and had to take significant swings downwards in 2014.
The Ferrari 288 GTO, something like the first Ferrari super sports car and predecessor to the F40, F50 and Enzo, has now reached over two million euros. The car is literally a hot tip: Because the fuel lines could not withstand the load from the 400 hp 2.8-liter V8, 70 of the approximately 270 cars produced were burned out. However, they have been completely rebuilt.
Big differences in the Jaguar E-Type
American muscle cars such as the Ford Mustang are chronically undervalued. A rare 1960s model sells for less than 100,000 euros, while a 1962 Shelby Cobra 289 sold for over a million dollars at auction.

The HAGI-EX-F increased by at least eight percent-&-P index for all other brands too. The Italian alternative to Ferrari, the Lamborghini Miura SV, reaches prices between one and a half and two million euros. The Aston Martin DB5, which is currently worth half a million euros, could also be a profitable investment.
More and more derivatives of the Jaguar E-Type are slowly exceeding the 100,000 euro mark. Here, too, special expertise is required because there can be a price difference of 150,000 euros between individual versions.
