Aral is expanding its fast charging network for electric cars. In 2021, the petrol station operator plans to increase the number of its charging points at petrol stations fivefold. The company plans to have 100 charging points of its own at 25 filling stations by the end of February, and then 500 charging points at 120 filling stations by the end of the year. All donate green electricity and have an impressive charging capacity of 300 or 350 kilowatts.

That sounds good, but 120 filling stations with charging stations are just five percent of the total of 2,400 Aral filling stations in Germany – so there is still room for improvement.

Aral’s activities in the field of electromobility will operate under the name Aral pulse in the future. The charging stations have a special logo.

"The heart of the new Aral pulse logo is an electron in motion. The charging stations are given this new design and visually stand out from the fuel pumps." (Aral)

Aral did not provide any information about the electricity costs for the new fast chargers. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, however, learned on request that you could "pay using a QR code with your own credit card" at the pump – presumably via an app. For this, 69 cents per kilowatt hour are charged. In a few weeks, it should also be possible to pay via PayPal and later also directly with the credit card without a smartphone.

According to the FAZ, the Aral advance could be a consequence of the last car summit in November, when it was decided to expand the charging network more quickly. The federal government now wants a quarter of all petrol stations to have fast chargers by the end of 2022, then 50 percent by the end of 2024 and even 75 percent by the end of 2026. To this end, the government wanted to seek a voluntary commitment on the part of the petrol station operators.

Another reason could be the so-called GHG amendment, with which the federal government wants to get the mineral oil industry to sell more CO2-neutral fuels such as electricity (but also green hydrogen). To this end, the greenhouse gas reduction quota (GHG quota) is to increase gradually from 6 to 22 percent by 2030.

But energy providers are now also building fast chargers. EnBW recently put its 500th location into operation, by the end of 2021 it should be 1,000. The car manufacturers are also striving for a better charging infrastructure and have founded the joint venture Ionity for this purpose, which is aiming for 400 fast charging stations in Europe, of which around 300 already exist. In addition, Audi is currently considering its own charging network with 200 to 300, which could possibly be operated together with Porsche.
