Mercedes has switched off its armored G-Class and will only rely on an almost indomitable S-Class in the future. The heads of state have a new dream car.

For decades, German premium manufacturers have set the tone worldwide at the Panzer limousines. The triumvirate from Audi A8, BMW 7 Series and Mercedes S-Class is not only the measure of things in the normal luxury limousines, but also in the highly secured armored versions. BMW was shaken by the current generation and has no longer a heavy armor in the program since the BMW 733i of Generation E23.

Audi, on the other hand, remained true to his line and, among other things, still provides the state limousine of Chancellor Angela Merkel. Now Daimler follows and adds a tank version of the still young Mercedes S-Class. A cancellation is this for the armored Mercedes G-Class, which is still only available as a normal vehicle. From the predecessor of the Mercedes W 463 generation, there were very successfully for many years of tank versions that made a name.

In the future, Daimler will rely on its S-Class solely on armored vehicles. The new model can only be obtained with a long wheelbase and the 450 kW / 612 PS / 830 Nm strong V12 turbo engine of the Maybach. A specially extended XXL version like the Pullman Guard of the predecessor should no longer exist. For this purpose, Mercedes now also offers its armored S-Class with the overdue all-wheel drive, which was previously only available in the Audi A8 and the now expired VW Phaeton and was very popular with the personal protection because of the dynamic advantages.

While most armored vehicles are settled at 210 km/h due to tires with corresponding emergency running properties, the new Panzer-S class of the VR10 protection level is already at 190 km/h. Axes and tires of the 4.2-ton model available as a four- and five-seater come from the previous version. The maximum payload is 660 kilograms. The protection class VR10 fulfills the highest ballistic test stage for civil vehicles and is not only secured against corresponding explosives, but also against the shelling with assault rifles with appropriate steel hard kernel ammunition.

So far, the corresponding protective materials in the Mercedes armored limousines have been integrated into the series raw construction structure, a specific tank building from protective elements has been developed for the first time in the new S Guard. The occupants sit in a maximum protected cell, which should only be noticed, because from the outside the Mercedes S 680 Guard looks almost like a normal S-Class. At second glance, optical differences can only be recognized with the centimeter thick slices and the tire with Michelin’s Pax emergency running system.

In addition to the invisible tank elements, the transparent area of the windows is an essential part of the protective concept. Material and thickness of the multi-layer disc sandwich also meet the requirements of the classification VR10.

Emergency running tires and splinter protection discs

On the inside, the panes are coated with a polycarbonate splinter protection. On request, there is a refrigerator that can be used from the interior in the 390 liter loading room. In addition to the armored cell, there are fist thick glass panes and window lifts with a hydraulic emergency function. Other special equipment includes a fire extinguishing system, an emergency fresh air system that protects inmates from penetrating smoke or irritant gases and supplied with fresh air. Since most vehicles go to the service of authorities, governments or royal houses, the Guard models are equipped with flashers, signaling system or radio. So much security has its price, because the production time of the heavily armored Mercedes S-Class is 51 days. The exact purchase price has not yet been determined – but it should be around 500.000 euros.

  2. Is great,
4.2 tons as a combustion engine, what will the part weigh as an electric slingshot, 8 tons ? Super development, if such a part is involved in an accident, every opponent of the accident is flattened.

As far as armored limousines are concerned, trust rich celebrities or politicians prefer to experience the experience from Germany. Tesla builds good cars, maybe better electric cars, but you get decades of experience with armor. Not up in a few years. Mercedes remains the NR.1. In addition there is also image in these circles.

  4. Germany No. 1
After all, we are leading worldwide in this area. As long as there are still such vehicles for the celebrities and politicians, nothing will change that. They are certainly not moved with a battery. However, only affects a very small clientele, but shows clearly how limited the battery is. There is actually a Tesla in "Security version " ?

  5. Yes now,
There is just a market for such vehicles and yes, they are German manufacturers who clearly dominate them. That won’t change either. Where else do you get such safety, driving comfort including luxury and elegance? Nobody else dominates that in shape. There are areas in automotive.B. Tesla simply nothing to report. In other words, like many heads of state or kings, they know which officially travel with a Tesla? Just. That is probably his reasons, not true.

  6. Oh yes, that’s the case, Mr. Harper
Then just read a little further up. And no, secretly I know that my statement is correct. Do not assume that stupid stuff. By the way, please show me the politicians and crowned heads who drive around with a armored Tesla. I’m waiting for receipts, then I may correct myself. My comment on the topic is 100% correct, whether it suits you or not.

Of course, this can be talked about on the rear seats about CO2 tax and e-mobility. Rarely gap and reality diverge further.

  8. Yes well, Mr. Busch
There are offices and dignitaries where the best possible security is important. This brings with it a certain vehicle weight. If you are able to build a comparably safe vehicle that weighs significantly less, please, I’m sure the manufacturers have an open ear.
