Rock’n’Roll in Rolls-Royce: The Silver Shadow of the late “Queen” singer Freddie Mercury went under the hammer in England. And on top of that there was something private for the buyer.

90,000 euros for a 40-year-old car: At an auction in Birmingham in the UK on Monday, a Russian businessman secured a Rolls-Royce that formerly belonged to Freddie Mercury, as the auction house Coys announced.

The singer of the group "Queen" was always a passenger in the gray vehicle – he did not have a driver’s license.

Mercury’s Goose Productions bought the Silver Shadow in 1979. The singer used it until his death in 1991. The car, which was built in 1974, has about 100,000 kilometers on the clock today.

Six times the set price

Before the auction, it was last seen publicly in 2002 at the premiere of the Queen musical “We will Rock You”. The former Queen manager Jim Beach confirmed in a letter that the Rolls-Royce offered by Coys was actually Mercury’s car.

Coys had set the price for the car at 9,000 to 11,000 pounds (the equivalent of 11,000 to 13,000 euros). The Russian entrepreneur paid £ 74,600 (€ 89,700), more than six times as much.

A pack of tissues as an addition

The result was unexpected, after all, the Silver Shadow is neither a particularly rare nor a most sought-after Rolls-Royce model.

In return for this, the new owner not only receives a car, but also a pack of tissues. According to the auction house, Mercury’s family could not get the package out of the car after his death.
