Software update for model years 2019 and 2020 – but not "over the air"

Audi e-tron 55 quattro: 20 km more range for early models-e-tron

The Audi e-tron has been on the market since March 2019, initially only as an e-tron 55 quattro with 300 kW. The early copies of this version now get more range. A software update for the 2019 and 2020 model years should enable up to 20 kilometers more.

However, the owners have to drive to the dealer for this, an over-the-air update is not offered.

Audi promises "up to 20 kilometers" or five percent more range for real driving. The software update for all Audi e-tron 55 quattro series vehicles built between mid-September 2018 (model year 2019) and the end of November 2019 (model year 2020) can now be installed free of charge by service partners.

Audi is thus also giving the early adopter of the e-tron a software improvement that buyers will receive as standard from the end of 2019. The technology update introduced at the time also included optimized hardware, which of course will not be retrofitted to cars that have already been sold.

A total of 34,000 vehicles can be updated, according to Audi. The e-tron Sportback, i.e. the coupe version of the Audi e-tron, is not affected by the update, because it was only introduced at the same time as the technology update at the end of 2019.

The software update extends, among other things, the usable storage capacity of the battery. The 95 kWh gross battery then provides 86 kWh net, which of course increases the range. In addition, after the software update, the front asynchronous motor is almost completely de-energized – which avoids drag losses and thus reduces power consumption.

The update also improves cooling. The system, which consists of four separate cooling circuits, then heats the battery even more efficiently. In addition, less cooling liquid is circulated, which reduces the energy consumption of the pumps. Apparently, the cooling is sufficient for loads from fast charging or aggressive driving.
