Audi electrical strategy 2020: from four do ‘two!

Audi follows the VW concentration dictation and increasingly relies on electromobility. The purely battery -electrically operated vehicles will only be on two platforms in the future, similar to that is already the case with the models with the four rings on the radiator grille today.

For the VW Group it is called "All in", so put everything on one card. After all, Europe’s largest car manufacturer will invest a third of its total expenditure in electromobility and digitization over the next five years. This means that investments in billions of billions are not moving, this is not an inconsiderable risk. Audi alone invests around 14 billion euros in electromobility by the end of 2023. "If the prediction that a third of our sales will be BEVS by 2025 will not arrive, we have a problem," says Dr. Ulrich Widmann The Technical Head of the PPE platform on the Audi page, that is, that architecture, which Ingolstadter develops together with Porsche. Ulrich Widmann is not one who prematurely presses the panic button, the technician speaks with a pleasant Bavarian accent, calm and deliberate. His assessment is all the more remarkable.

Audi is on the brink without electrical success

But the plan is standing. Audi will launch more than electrified 30 models by 2025. First the focus is on the plug-in hybrid, later some purely electrical cars are to follow. Less or nothing can be heard of synthetic fuels or CNG vehicles in Ingolstadt. After all, there are three CNG models on the Audi homepage. There is still a lot to do with the platforms. The e-tron and the soon following Sportback Coupe are based on the MLB EVO kit, which is primarily intended for combustion engines and is only suitable for purely electrical vehicles.

The Audians want to land the first AHA effect at the end of 2020 with the e-tron GT, which they themselves describe as "Halo Car" in the best Denglisch. The technical brother of the Taycan is said to be a typical Audi and 40 millimeters lower than the A7. In the technology of the J1 platform, the Ingolstadt residents do not have too much opportunities to differentiate themselves from the brother from Zuffenhausen.

E-tron GT: 590 hp and plenty of high-tech

In order to get a reasonably reasonable business model at the E-Tron GT, you have to stick to the hardware from Zuffenhausen. But in the interior, the operating concept, the design and through software modifications (also with the drive train), the Ingolstadt residents want to turn the Taycan an audi to the end of 2020. 434 kW / 590 hp, a all -wheel steering, a differential on the rear axle, other performance variants are currently planned and additional functions are to be optionally wirelessly activated. The athlete will run off the assembly line together with the R8 in Heilbronn. The BOllingen farms are being converted for this.

"The electromobiles will make scale effects cheaper," says Ulrich Widmann. This is also urgently needed if the risk should pay off. That is why Audi will of course also use the VW MEB and first put the Q4 e-tron on it. The SUV should appear in 2021, 225 kW / 306 hp and a rear drive will have. The all -wheel drive is optional.

With a wheelbase of 2.77 meters, the considerable crossover also promises a good room economy. It is not a big secret that further forms of body are planned. An SUV Coupe or a sedan are feasible with the MEB. In the long term, the Audi model range, like now, should be on two architectures: the MEB and the Premium Platform Electronic (PPE). By default, it has rear-wheel drive, a large range, the quattro option, 800 volt technology for fast charging and will primarily be used in the upper and luxury class.

This kit grants Audi and Porsche many freedom because it can be scalable in three areas: the wheelbase, the width, and the ground clearance. The PPE Coupe should be the first Audi model in late 2022 / early 2023. It is important to the Audians and, above all, designer Marc Lichten that with this architecture ”, despite the battery packages in the underbody, coupes and limousines are also feasible, i.e. real low-floor automobiles and not obtained high-legged vehicles in which the batteries conceal the ground freedom. That will also be necessary. "Customer demand will be radically moving," explains Dr. Ulrich Widmann. So not only will SUVs and crossover be asked, but also classic body forms. What actually speaks against a BEV roadster with fabric hat and lots of driving fun?

With the battery cells, Audi will continue to keep all options open in the future and design the batteries in such a way that different cell species can be used. Setchaft batteries are also feasible, but until these wonders are installed in the series, the Audi technician believes that it will take some time – rather in the second half of the next decade.

  1. Sense of the mobility???
I think that actually makes sense of the mobility with cars that weigh 2.5 t and almost 600 hp … have been perverted. Fortunately, there are still really environmentally friendly alternatives. Definitely not

Unfortunately, this is the downfall of VW and Merkel, Habeck and Greta have achieved their goal of destroying Germany’s economy. We now need a car company that has developed the concepts that have been proven for 100 years. Here we were undefeated world market leaders. Not one that jumps on short -term eco -fascism.

  3. Again for the very ignorant …
We have to become emission -free ! This is not possible with a combustion engine. The 100-year-old concepts are at the end, the development is exhausted on how to use the downsizing engines with questionable fuel savings (start-stop, cylinder shutdown, 8-speed gearbox, 48V-stock network, which are no longer particularly durable,…) can recognize.

  4. It will not work like that
There is simply no market for the optimistic plans from Audi. Since the government does not offer real incentives with its climate package, they remain a niche product. A couple will run in company leasing – and after three years form an unsalable heap. Nobody with a clear mind buys such a box after three years as a used car.

  7. Tank lasts for a car life
In the case of burners, a tank lasts for at least one car life with full filling, i.e. over 20 years. On the batteries, the several 10.000 euros costs are guaranteed only 8 years at 80% of the capacity. Battery car what a step backwards.

  8. That’s nonsense !
Regular table argument. Please prove this nonsense that all e-car opponents have in the repertoire ! The tank may keep forever, the engine of our oh so great modern boxes certainly not.

  9. As a normal earner
You often only buy a car as well used after about 3 years, since new vehicles are simply too expensive. But with a 3 year old Electo Auto you have to ask yourself how long the battery will last now? Stupid if the used one is ready for the scrap press after 3-4 years, or must be disposed of expensive. Because in the east or Africa nobody wants to have such a cat.

  10. When I am the current e-tron
Looking at Audi like that, I cannot imagine that something reasonable will come out of it. This is the prime example of how e-mobility does not work. An electrical monster with corresponding power consumption, extremely overweight and unfortunately also showy, a toy for "better" people. Nobody needs something like that. E-mobility is currently v.A. One topic for the city, where the whole thing actually only has advantages over petrol/diesel. The low range is also irrelevant. Unfortunately, an e-tron looks like an elephant in the porcelain shop.

  11. Technical basics deficits
If Audi does not quickly catch up with the technical deficits in battery technology, drive engines and rectifiers quickly, a platform does not help much. A platform brings nothing for a better range.

Effects new stars, they should develop seriously in terms of customer satisfaction, service, competence and customer compensation. In recent years one has been from " lead by technology" Don’t recognize much more. I will no longer buy a car from this group in this life.

means leaving here? Which normal citizen can only afford one of these electrical bowls? That should explain to us site. BMW, Audi, Daimler, they have all been missing the electro market of the motor vehicle industry for years.
