Erlkonig pictures, a rendering and rumors about the new series

The upcoming Porsche Macan will have an electric drive and will be based on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE), Audi's platform for medium-sized and large electric cars. And if the rumor mill is right, there will also be an Audi counterpart.

There are already Erlkonig pictures of the Audi showing a slightly coupe-like SUV. The prototype apparently has a closed grille; the front apron is still missing. The car looks completely different from the current Q5 with an internal combustion engine. The short overhangs suggest that this is a vehicle on a dedicated electric platform – in contrast to the Audi e-tron, which is still based on the MLB platform.

A rendering by Avarvarii goes well with this Erlkonig:

Avarvarii writes "Q5 / Q6 e-tron". That fits, because the name is still unclear. Audi is faced with a problem here: While there is a numerical order with the combustion engine models, the electric world is still chaotic. The debut Audi e-tron is an eccentric, and the name Q4 e-tron could also stand for a plug-in hybrid (analogous to A3 e-tron and Q8 e-tron).

According to a report by Auto-Bild, the equivalent of the Porsche Macan is said to be called the Q6 e-tron and the big brother of the Q4 e-tron. But why then Q6 and not Q5? Maybe because of the difference to the current Q5. But we still believe that the car will be christened Q5 e-tron, as the VW Group has already mentioned this name in a document from November 2020:

In the chart above, VW placed the Audi Q5 e-tron right next to the next-generation Porsche Macan, which will have electric drive – possibly an indication that both models will be based on the same platform. According to the chart, both models should start in 2022.

And what if the Q5 e-tron were simply the coupe-like variant of the Q5 e-tron (analogous to the pair of Q7 / Q8)? It is possible, but more likely, that the coupe-SUV would then be called the Q5 Sportback. Well, in the end, these are pretty baseless speculations.

And what about the electric Macan? The rumor mill says it will be the first PPE vehicle to be unveiled. A clay model that was in the background of another Porsche model (919 Street) could be seen:

On this basis, Kolesa created two renderings, with the rear end being quite speculative, but fitting in with the current Porsche design language:

The PPE platform should, so to speak, inherit the modular longitudinal construction kit (MLB), just as the MEB is the equivalent of the modular transverse construction kit (MQB). Audi showed us a prototype based on PPE as early as 2019. We weren't allowed to photograph it, but it looked like an A4 or A5.

In any case, PPE should offer goodies such as air suspension, torque vectoring and rear wheel steering. As with the MEB, all-wheel drive is also possible in addition to rear-wheel drive. In addition, the new platform that Audi is developing with Porsche is said to have fast charging capabilities (350 kW), which probably indicates an 800-volt system like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Porsche Taycan.
