The Audi Grandsphere is much more than a concept study. The elegant prototype already shows a very concrete view of the successor to the Audi A8, which comes onto the market at the end of 2024.
It was one of these days that designers don’t always enjoy. It was about the successor to the Audi A8. Marc Lichten, the top form of the Ingolstadt car manufacturer, should present his ideas of the executive floor of the VW Group. Usually a situation in which the creativity of the formers is braked. "Too expensive", "technically not realizable" or simply "does not hit the taste of the customers". But this time everything turned out differently. VW corporation boss Herbert Diess granted Marc Lichte with the statement: "Audi was always successful when you were brave", almost a persilion to take new ways.

A creative head cannot be said twice. The result: The Audi Grandsphere Concept study is on the IAA 2021 and gives a fairly specific view of the next generation of the Audi A8. At 75 to 80 percent, Marc Licht estimates the series maturity of the concept car, which has a remarkable presence with a length of 5.35 meters and a wheelbase of 3.19 meters. Audi’s new flagship, which is due to herald a new aegis at the turn of 2024/25, breaks with many conventions.

First, the Audi Grandsphere optically mislead the viewer. If you look at the study at an angle from behind, the front hood still seems relatively normal to you. As soon as you go forward, you can see that there is not much left of the mighty radiator hood, which was once a status symbol of powerful engines.

“The hood is radically short. The shortest I have ever designed, ”says Marc Licht. The same applies to the elegant silhouette of the concept car, which is more of a GT than a classic notch rear sedan, whose time is probably over anyway. But here too the impression is wrong. The Audi Grandsphere is basically a van with lots of space. An elegant vehicle, more gliders than Trutzburg. Wicks like the wide -out side windows, which suddenly rejuvenate inwards towards the roof and the striking rear spoiler result in a very good aerodynamics, which has an increase in range.

Thanks to a 120-kilowatt hour battery, this should be more than 750 kilometers. When charging, the Audi engineers are currently still relying on the 800-volt technology, but by the end of 2024 a lot of water will flow down the Danube.

The Audi Grandsphere has enough strength. This comes from two electric motors with a total of 530 kW / 721 hp performance, a torque of 930 Newton meters and a top speed beyond the 200 km / h. This is pure driving dynamic sovereignty, but old world. The new world is called autonomous driving. The GrandSphere is said to master the robo driving of the level 4 in the second half of the decade. Ambitious plans when you keep in mind how difficult the current Audi A8 is with the autonomous driving of the 3 level.

Place is the new luxury. That is why the GrandSphere was developed from the inside out. “We turn the Business Class the first class in front right at the back right. That is the real revolution, ”says Mark Licht. If desired, the seat back can be inclined to 60 degrees to the rear. The sitting test showed that you can really sleep through from Munich to Hamburg like on the plane. Also because the pedals and the steering wheel disappear completely. It will be different with the series, the valance will withdraw, but will remain visible.

Autonomous driving should become a reality
The windshield also contributes to the outstanding feeling of space, which adorns a continuous display. In the concept car, the displays are projected onto the wood applications as with a projector. "We are still working on the implementation," Marc Lichte orders the technology. In the first step, the Audi Grandsphere will still be equipped with conventional monitors. However, the displays can not only be used for information on the speed or the remaining range, but also for video games, films or TV program. In order to be able to implement this infotainment, the Ingolstadt car manufacturer becomes high-tech giant such as Apple, Google or streaming services such as Netflix.This is how an automobile test of courage can look. Incidentally, Audi boss Markus Duesmann also raised the thumb at the sight of the Grandsphere.
