As in Audi‘s compact models, the all-wheel drive works with a Haldex clutch, which directs part of the drive force to the rear axle if there is no traction. Audi has revised the chassis to an unusually large extent for the sports models: for example, the torsion beam rear axle has been replaced by the more complex four-link construction. A.udi is now turning the A1 into a sharp weapon that is aimed primarily at the new Mini: From this summer, the elegant cousin of the VW Polo will also be available as the S1 with an impressive 231 hp and a correspondingly sharpened design. That should be enough to stand up to the new Cooper S with only 192 hp so far. At least until the Munich counterpart with the John Cooper Works.

The two-liter turbo, which is also used in the Golf GTI, for example, gets the little power man going. It develops up to 370 Newton meters, which, as always with the S models, are of course transmitted to all four wheels. That is enough for impressive sprint values ​​of just under six seconds and a top speed at which the Mini is left behind.

Because the S1, like every S model 250 and the Cooper S, only manages a speed of 230 km / h, BMW customers only see the more aggressively drawn front with the large fan grilles of the Audi in the rearview mirror for a moment, then the silhouette with the larger sills wipes past and they can look after the crisp rear with the four tailpipes and the small roof spoiler.

Great thirst

However, they will meet again at the gas station. Because you don’t get very far with the S1. Where the most frugal A1 is satisfied with 4.7 liters as gasoline and even 3.8 liters as diesel, the little muscle man is very thirsty and indulges in 7.0 liters as three-door and 7.1 liters as five-door on the test bench. And it should be easy to put this value into double digits in practice.

The S1 is officially the first S model among the small cars. But Bayern already have a bit of experience in this segment. After all, two years ago they launched a similar small series as the A1 Quattro, which even got 256 hp and looked even more desolate.

However, the Lords of the Rings also asked for 49,900 euros for this. Seen in this way, the S1, which is of course also sportily revamped on the inside, is almost a bargain for 29,950 euros as a three-door and 30,800 euros as a Sportback – even if it costs almost twice as much as the entry-level model.
