The German Chemistry Group BASF and the Chinese battery manufacturer Svolt have made an agreement in which both parties will work through their respective global activities in the development of cathode materials, raw materials supply and battery recycling for battery cells from Svolt. Cooperation should also improve the research and development capacities of both sustainable battery materials and strengthen the competitiveness of both parties on the largest battery market, China, as well as worldwide, so BASF in a recent communication.
In addition, cooperation should help to achieve China’s goal for reducing carbon emissions and to accelerate worldwide development towards carbon neutrality. Both companies also want to examine a joint upstream procurement in order to improve security of supply with sought-after raw materials.
“The strategic partnership with Svolt will further expand our strong position on the fast-growing market for battery materials,” says Dr. Peter Schuhmacher, head of the Catalysts division. As a global supplier of battery materials, he sees BASF as “ideally positioned to supply tailored, high-performance cathode materials for SVOLT’s cell technology.”
“The strategic collaboration with BASF is an important part of SVOLT’s global supply chain,” said Yang Hongxin, Chairman and CEO of SVOLT. The two companies’ strategic cooperation aims to “complement each other’s strengths along the battery supply chain, accelerate innovation capabilities in R&D for cathode materials, and continuously promote portfolio innovation and core competitiveness for electric car batteries.”.”
As one of the largest chemical suppliers to the automotive industry, BASF has a strong position in the cathode materials market, including a global presence in production, research and development and a broad portfolio of cathode materials with medium to high nickel content, as well as high-manganese and cobalt-free compounds. In Europe, BASF is launching the production of cathode materials with what it says is an industry-leading carbon footprint. Among other things, advanced process technology, a secure local raw material supply chain, a favorable energy mix for production and short and effective logistics along the supply chain should be responsible for this. BASF continuously works closely with partners to accelerate innovation and create a sustainable battery value chain worldwide. The collaboration with SVOLT is not the first of its kind for BASF. There is also a similar agreement with CATL, one of the world’s largest battery producers.
SVOLT is a global high-tech battery company. It has seven R&D centers in Wuxi, Baoding, Shanghai and Shenzhen in China, as well as in Japan, Korea and India. And is building plants in Germany for the production of battery cells for electric cars, among other things. The company is also expanding the upstream and downstream value chains and striving to build a large enterprise in the global new energy industry.
