When e-cars burn, it becomes complicated for the fire brigade. But large quantities of extinguishing water or even water -filled containers in battery burns are not absolutely necessary – there is a new trick.

It is important to cool the battery, which can often only be ensured by a lot of water. However, the Austrian fire service device manufacturer Rosenbauer has now presented a new product that is supposed to reliably extinguish a burning battery with little water.

Cool burning batteries directly

The fire service device manufacturer Rosenbauer is launching a new extinguishing system for lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles. The system should be able to delete high-voltage batteries safely and efficiently. The linchpin is as direct cooling of the battery modules or the cells within the modules and thus an interruption of the chain reaction of the burning cells.

The system consists of two main components, a deletion and a control unit that are connected to each other with hoses. The fire -fightingness is positioned directly on the battery and – if necessary – supported on the body or other points. The firefighters can safely activate the system via the control unit from around eight meters away from the vehicle, whereupon a special extinguishing bucket is driven into the battery with a force of several tons. There the extinguishing water is to get directly into the interior of the battery through a perforated fire lock. The water should then fill the battery completely and cool it efficiently. Rosenbauer promises in a press release that the amount of water in a normal tank fire should be sufficient in order to be able to extinguish the battery.

So far, for the cooling of a burning battery that could ignite again without this cooling, a lot of water has often been needed. Sometimes burning electric cars are even lifted in a container full of water for 24 to 48 hours to prevent new inflammation. However, this was usually not necessary, said Christoph Emrich, fire chief at the Munich fire brigade. Instead, it is important to cool the battery, which partly realizes the Munich fire brigade via a jet tube that is attached to the underbody of the vehicle.The new invention of Rosenbauer works very similarly, albeit more specialized – but the usability ensures more security for the firefighters from a greater distance. The preferred position for the Rosenbauer fire system is between the road and the vehicle when the vehicle is on all four wheels. However, it is also possible to insert the system via the indoor and trunk or, with vehicles on the side or on the roof, from the top.
After the battery has been sufficiently cooled, the affected vehicle can be removed. According to Rosenbauer, the extinguishing system can remain in the battery during transport and at the quarantine area and can be quickly activated at any time.

    … Extinguishing water feedings would also be conceivable, as they are in buildings for the sprinkler systems … gives that are installed on the e-cart like a fuel socket and connected to the battery inside.     Based on this phenomenal invention, one could also make special and designated electric car parking spaces in parking garages and underground garages more fire and fire-proof. Simply enter several small extinguishing lances into the bottom of the parking spaces, which, controlled via suitable fire alarm devices, ramming from below into the battery, similar to a facir board, and immediately prevent a chain reaction by water cooling. That would also be an ingenious development, which would be stupid for the e-cart owner in the event of a false alarm.

    Even the old knights knew how to deal with the lance. Now this proven combat technique is finally used for fire fighting in e-car battery brims, simply brilliant.     Here in the blog there is always argument about the deletion of e-car fires. The positions range from "Battery brands cannot be extinguished" (a forist actually claimed) to "are extremely difficult to extinguish, no comparison with combustion cars" to "the fire brigade must be able to or learn". Position 1, you don’t have to discuss for long, in reality you are refuted x times. Position 2 is contested by well -known firefighters. Position 3 is most likely to hit the matter. Whereby new new developments such as the water lance presented here can be helpful to delete them more efficiently & reduce the effort and any environmental damage. In contrast, demands for a TG ban on electric cars or even their general ban do not help.
