BMW 320E in the test: Why this hybrid combination is the smartest 3 Series – tests

With the 320E, BMW offers a cheap plug-in hybrid combination. Site tested the BMW 320e Touring and reveals why the smallest 3-series hybrid is the smartest 3 Series. In the video you can see the comparison test of the larger BMW 330e to 330d.

After 330e, BMW brings its plug-in hybrid technology into the company car class with the 320E. Visually, 330e and 320e hardly differ. And the two hybrid-3s are also technically very similar. For a long time, the times are when a 3-liter six-cylinder worked in the 30s BMW and in the 20s only a four-cylinder with two liters of displacement.

Both in the 330e and 320e, two-liter four-cylinder petrol engines work with electrical support on an eight-speed automatic. Both variants can be ordered with all-wheel drive or rear wheel drive. The biggest difference: the large 330e comes to a system output of 292 hp in boost mode, the 320e pulls more conservative 204 hp from the hybrid drive train. Sure, in the 0-100 sprint the 320e cannot keep up with the 330e. His sprint value of almost eight seconds still feels brisk in practice.

Performance, consumption & shop

In order to call up these power, lead foot and speed are required for the BMW hybrids. The roar of the four-cylinder does not match the luxurious character of the hybrid 3. In everyday life, the 320e, like its big brother, can be moved confidently electrically and hybrid. The e-motor of the 320E may only be 68 hp (113 hp in boost mode), but its torque of 265 Newton meters presses the BMW calmly and powerfully at every speed and speed. The petrol engine is added if necessary. At the latest at 140 km/h, purely electrically ended. The transitions from the combustion engine to the electric drive and back are as smooth and cultivated as in the luxury class cars.

The 320e also resembles the 330e when it comes to electrical reach and consumption. With its 12 kWh battery, the 320e drives around 45 kilometers in commuting traffic. In pure city traffic, it creates almost exactly 50 kilometers. If the battery is completely discharged, the gasoline consumption of the 320e with GPS-calibrated permanent pace of 130 on the highway is eight liters per 100 kilometers. Consumption is easily below five liters on normally driven long distances. The consumption values are similar to those of the 330e to the area of measurement blur.

The 320E can only achieve its bombastic standard consumption of 1.4 liters on a statistical means-iron charging discipline and use within the electrical range provided. The standard is also next to it when it comes to electricity consumption. Instead of the manufacturer of 14.3 kWh/100 km, 320e sucks around 24 kWh from the battery.

On the long distance just between, the 3-series hybrids are not worth it. The 320e has a maximum charging capacity of 3.7 kW. In this way, unloaded batteries can be completely filled in a good three and a half hours. At the socket, the complete load takes over five hours. Loading overnight or at work works without any problems.

Processing, space & utility value

The threesome has long since played the role of the compact everyday athlete: 4.71 meters measures the current model and is therefore 35 centimeters longer than the original version. Despite the size, the 320-combination is not suitable for the chauffeur use. The battery package behind the back seat limits the headroom. The rear seats are more suitable for children and small people. At the front there is the BMW-typical, driver-oriented cockpit.

Material and processing of the interior are a question of the equipment package for the 320e. The 3 Series are already solid in the base. In the tested M equipment, the interior of the 320e with the larger 330e is equal: the material is of high quality, the processing is flawless.

The trunk can be used very well with its volume of 410 liters. The petrol engine is 90 liters more. Despite a flat edge in the trunk, even large and bulky objects can be easily invited. In the case of sitting, 1420 liters of load space are free. The maximum permissible trailer load is one and a half tons. Roof box and roof rails are possible up to 75 kilograms.

Driving assistance & infotainment

The 320e can be equipped with the same infotainment and driving assistance systems like the 330- and they are very good by the bank. The latest variant of the BMW electronics recognizes red traffic lights and stop signs and warns via the info display and the excellent head-up display. The threesome also reads traffic signs and can automatically adapt the cruise control speed to restrictions and to the routes.

In the hybrid driving program "ECO Pro" the hybrid BMW recognizes environmental zones and automatically switches to electric mode. If you leave the environmental zone again, the 320e switch to the hybrid driving mode to save electricity for the next inner city stage.

The motorway ride with a lane assistant and spacing is very supple. The steering interventions are very gentle at BMW and with exactly the right intensity. That’s how it should be. The detection of the hands on the steering wheel is occasionally wrong on long straight sections, the warning message is annoyed by flashing lights in the steering wheel – and can be switched off in God.

The inclusion of real-time traffic data works better and better from generation to generation: the test cars were also able to predict traffic jams in downtown Munich. The navigation with the data from Here Maps can compete with Google Maps. The integration of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay works smoothly. The standard stand climatization, which can be programmed via the infotainment system or the BMW app, is particularly pleasant.

Prices & conclusion

As a sedan, the 320e costs at least 47.450 euros. As a station wagon 49.000 euros. The 320s are so roughly 6000 euros cheaper than the larger 330. In addition, the 320e fulfills the prerequisite for the environmental bonus. Buyers can still deduct 6750 euros from the list price.

Thanks to the lower system performance of the 320E, the 320e is now also accessible to many company car drivers, which should not previously go for the 292 hp. As a plug-in hybrid, the 320e also benefits from the halved company car tax rate. In everyday use, the 320e is just as confident and comfortable as the larger 330e and much more affordable. The 320e is not only the smartest choice among the 3-Series BWMS for company car drivers.
