Germany loves diesel. But plug-in hybrid are also becoming increasingly popular. Efharer.com tested the 3 Series BMW as a diesel and plug-in hybrid against each other and shows which drive drives better, cheaper and greener.
BMWS Premium-Dienstwagen 330D has had a tough competitor since the new regulation of the company car taxation: The plug-in-hybrid 330e has almost the same performance as the 330d, it costs almost as much, but its driver tax only 0.5 percent of the list price as a monetary advantage , half as much as with diesel. The 330e can really give the award -winning 330d the water? He is really better for the environment? This clarifies the detailed efahrer double test with both cars.
While the 330d rely on the well-known three-liter six-cylinder diesel, the four-cylinder with two liters of displacement is from the 320i in 330e. 135 kW (i.e. 184 hp) the combustion engine does. It is supplemented by the same electric motor, which is also installed in the 530e or in the X5 45E on the gearbox and does 83 kW (113 hp) here.

The system performance results in 185 kW (252 hp) – the performance of the two engines cannot be easily added because the maxima is at different speeds. The electric machine moves from a 13 kWh battery, which is installed in the area of the rear axle under the trunk floor and the rear seat bench. We were able to charge a maximum of 10.8 kWh with a "empty" battery (i.e. with the remaining range of zero). The difference to gross capacity remains as a reserve so that the car can always use the performance of both engines to start and accelerate-even on very long distances, the 330e uses this basic capacity for hybrid drive and thus increases efficiency.
The diesel delivers 265 hp and accelerates the 330d to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds, the 330e takes 5.9 seconds to the country street pace at the optimal start. So the diesel is faster. or? The answer is not that simple. Both cars only reach these acceleration values if you start with a launch control. The traction control DSC must be deactivated for this, the driving dynamics switch for "sport" is pressed. The left foot has to go to the brake, the right gays. When the engine is at speed, the cars start as soon as the foot is from the brake, with optimal slip, squeaky tires and pretty rabid. And yes: the diesel is faster.
In real life, the number from the car quartet does not play a special role: the diesel goes out at red traffic lights, for example, as long as the sports mode is not active. When kicking on the accelerator pedal, the diesel starts with a clearly noticeable shaking and only then it starts. The 330d makes it very quick, but the electric motor pushes the 330e a few meters in the same time, the petrol engine comes depending on the accelerator insert and simply needs to be added. This difference not only comes into its own from a standstill: if you drive both cars in comfort or adaptive mode, then the speed remains in the diesel in the fuel-saving area around 1.500 revolutions per minute, the petrol engine in the 330e is missing if possible.

The step on the accelerator pedal on the 330d leads to the quick and smooth eight-speed gearboxes down by two or three gears, only then then the diesel. This delay does not exist in the 330e. Consumption and electrical reach
The battery capacity of the 330e is sufficient for at least 30 kilometers, in Munich commuting with stop-and-go and speeds of up to 120 km/h, we managed a maximum of 46 kilometers in the test. The car drives a maximum of 135 km/h quickly, the limitation to the electric drive does not mean that the journey will feel after waiving. It’s fun to get out a few kilometers of range by car. The e-consumption in this exercise is 22 to 30 kilowatt hours per 100 kilometers-significantly higher than with purely electrical cars.
BMW-typical with very low performance is reloaded: Even on public charging stations, the 330E only draws one-phase and with a maximum of 16 amps electricity. The resulting 3.7 kilowatts mean just over three hours of loading time to 100 percent-the new Audi plug-in hybrids are twice as fast, with the new Mercedes models there is even a direct current charging connection with loading capacity up to 20 kilowatts!

Interior: space and workmanship
The threesome has not played the role of the compact sporty sedan for a long time: 4.71 meters measures the current model and is therefore 35 centimeters longer than the original version. Both cars are practical in the interior. The biggest difference is revealed in the trunk and the biggest disadvantage of the 330e: its trunk volume is 100 liters less than that of the 330d, part of the volume is also under the trunk floor and goes on it for the charging cable. Disturbing on the smaller luggage compartment of the 330e is in particular that it is quite flat. Even a filled shopping basket can be too high for the trunk. Here the diesel has a clear advantage-and it seems completely incomprehensible that the touring version of the 330E with a year delay should only come onto the market in autumn of this year.

Assistance systems and infotainment
The new threesome offers everything in assistance systems that you already know from the five and puts something on top: The latest variant of the BMW electronics now also recognizes red traffic lights and stop signs and warns about the information display and the excellent head Up-display. The motorway ride with a lane assistant and spacing is very supple. The steering interventions are very gentle at BMW and with exactly the right intensity. That’s how it should be.
