The largest car market China demands electric cars – BMW wants to build the next electric mini in the People’s Republic. With a new partner. And avoid a mistake that Audi made.

BWM wants to produce the mini, which was previously exclusively built in Europe, in China in the future. Together with the Chinese car manufacturer Great Wall, the second generation of the electrically powered minis is to be produced in the People’s Republic – a corresponding declaration of intent was signed, BMW said in Munich. The first fully electric mini is to run off the assembly line in the Oxford English plant from 2019, with batteries and engines from the Bavarian works of Dingolfing and Landshut. The exact location, the amount of the investments and the start time for the second generation of the e-minis from China are still open. Great Wall is China’s largest manufacturer of city off -road vehicles (SUV).

Minimum quota for e-cars

To Great Britain, the USA and Germany, China is the fourth largest market for Mini, with 35.000 vehicles sold last year. Even with a view to the minimum quota for electric cars applicable from 2019 in China, BMW sees great potential for the electric mini. China raises high tariffs on imported cars, which forces foreign manufacturers to produce on site – with a Chinese partner.

The Bavarian carmaker wants to continue working with the Chinese car manufacturer Brilliance when building BMW’s brands. There is also no second sales organization planned.Audi had great trouble with his dealers a year ago at the start with a second partner in China. The result was a massive slump in sales. BMW had sold 560,000 cars of the main brand with the white-blue logo in China last year.

Minis are only manufactured in England and in the Netherlands in the maker Nedcar. The BMW Dotcher sold 372,000 minis worldwide last year. At the Oxford plant, the group employs 4,200 people.
