BMW eDrive Zones now in 138 European cities-edrive

Automaker BMW is rolling out its eDrive Zones, where plug-in hybrids automatically switch to all-electric driving mode, in 20 more European cities, including Copenhagen, Verona and Toulouse. A total of 138 cities in Europe are already benefiting from the technology. In the coming year, the use is planned in at least 30 other cities worldwide.

In an EDRIVE zone, plug-in hybrids from BMW switch automatically when entering inner-city areas such as environmental zones in the electric driving mode. Then they drive locally-free as well as fully electric models and with low energy costs, since electric motors in city traffic reach a cheaper efficiency as internal combustion engines. The vehicle recognizes the proven areas by means of geofencing technology and GPS.

The automatic EDRIVE function is available in many previous and all future BMW plug-in hybrids as standard. Customers are rewarded for any purely electrically driven kilometer with points – in an eDrive Zone even collect duplicate points – which you can redeem against charging current quotas. They also collect points while charging.

More quality of life for inner cities

According to the manufacturer, the BMW eDrive Zones and the points system for charging current quotas are a success story – for the emissions balance of the city centers and for drivers. The usage data at a glance:

  • The eDrive Zones therefore ensure higher proportions of electric driving, as they cover around 30.000 times a day in Europe automatically switch a plug-in hybrid into electric driving mode.
  • More than 75 percent of all journeys in an eDrive zone are already completed in electric driving mode. Of these, around 40 percent are already driving into the relevant areas in electric mode. An additional 35 percent now switch to electric driving mode using the eZone function.
  • In the last quarter alone, plug-in hybrids from BMW are said to have covered an additional 3.3 million kilometers in electric driving mode. This corresponds to more than 80 trips around the equator – electrically instead of previously in internal combustion engine operation.
  • Plug-in-hybrid customers of BMW collected around 150 million points since the first EDRive Zones in the summer of 2020, which they can redeem as charging current quotas. The advantages of the eDrive Zone digital service can be experienced in a large number of major European cities. Other countries and cities will be added to the list in the future, so that the proportion of electric driving by BMW plug-in hybrid models can be further increased in a constantly growing number of city areas.   1. Pointless attempt to defraud the environment/climate:
    BMW pretends that we can (still) afford to split our world into a dirty and a “green” zone…

  2. So, I drive off from my home with my fully charged plug-in hybrid – after 50 km the battery is empty and when I drive into the environmental zone of the next town – how exactly does it work with an empty battery?

    Exactly, the car will probably charge the battery with a diesel/petrol engine on a given route on the inter-city highway?
    – what nonsense, but you can talk yourself into anything.

    Incidentally, “funny jokes” were posted about Tesla at the time, in which the Tesla pulled a trailer on which a diesel generator stood and thus charged the vehicle at the same time.

    The frightening thing about this is that there are enough fools who believe the nonsense and think it’s great.

    At this point, all I can say is “thank you” that the media and politicians will continue to push this dumbing down of the people.

    My suggestion at this point to BMW:

    with a BEV you can omit the Green Zone mode because you always drive electrically!

    The problem is not the technology. The problem is that plug-in hybrids are almost exclusively bought as company cars because they benefit from better tax depreciation options. And while the employer also pays for the fuel for private use, no employee will put the private electricity bill for nightly charging in the garage on the table. The lobbyists demanded it – our politicians took it on 1 to 1.
