BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid - test and driving report-coupe

Test and driving report of the BMW i8 Coupe

Some cars make your eyes light up when you see them and even more so when you drive them. The reasons for this may be very different, but everyone knows this feeling. I felt the same when I received the BMW i8 Coupe for our test and driving report at the end of June.

The plug-in hybrid from BMW simply knows how to please. And I’m sure every grown man and of course woman will feel like a little kid again who gets a new toy when they get the opportunity to drive such a vehicle. At least that’s how I felt when I first got into the partially electrified sports car.

BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid - test and driving report-driving

Incidentally, this was confirmed to me on the first day with the BMW i8 Coupe, when the PHEV was parked in the yard and our two-year-old boy next door said, “Wow car”. So even the little boy has taste.

So before we get down to business, one more remark in advance. From the point of view of CO2 emissions, environmental regulations, etc., one can certainly discuss the sense or nonsense of a partially electrified drive in such a sports car. For me, however, I decided before the first drive that we would still enjoy driving the BMW i8 Coupe PHEV, as we rate it as what it was intended to be: a sports car with a plug-in hybrid.

  • As you are used to from my other reviews, the test of the BMW i8 Coupe is completely subjective and looks at the PHEV from my perspective. In doing so, I try to pick up on all the relevant points and also reproduce interesting technical details that I encountered during my one-week test period. If you have any questions, just let me know and I’ll try to answer them.

If you have already gained personal experience with the PHEV from BMW, then I look forward to hearing from you a comment under this test report. This article can provide you with basic knowledge about getting started with electric cars in advance; You can find initial information on plug-in hybrids in this article. Or a look at the F.A.Q. neither.

BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid – a first look at the electrified sports car

“Wow car” – these two words also went through my head when I received the partially electrified coupe from BMW i. Visually alone, the sports car stands out from all other electric cars and partially electrified vehicles that have been tested here on Elektroauto-News.not off. Not to mention the engine. And yet the partially electrified drive should not be left out of the equation.

BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid - test and driving report-coupe

The sports car in crystal white, pearl effect with BMW i blue accent and the Exclusive natural leather upholstery with fabric accent E-Copper (EC/AM) knows how to attract attention. And yet this will probably never become a vehicle for everyday use. On the one hand, there is a price equivalent to a condominium. On the other hand, the PHEV is already severely restricted for everyday use due to its classification as a sports car.

BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid - test and driving report-driving

The test car available to us came with a list price of 138.000.00 euros therefore. Furthermore, 1.750.00 euros for the paint and 18.EUR 250.00 is due for the special equipment. This results in a gross list price of 158.000.00 euros. This makes the BMW i8 Coupe more of a second or third vehicle for those who can and want to afford it.

And yet, of course, it’s a pleasure to get in, step on the gas and leave everything else behind. The coupe from the 2018 model year follows a good four years after the BMW i8 was first launched on the market – but the design has not changed much. To be fair, one has to say that even years later it still seems ahead of its time.

BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid - test and driving report-driving

However, a facelift is not entirely without a facelift; BMW i has therefore concentrated on subtle aerodynamic solutions and adjusted the airflow at the front. New wheel design, different seat colors and various decorative elements, as well as the Coupe lettering on the rear are also worth mentioning.

The new version of the BMW i8 Coupe can be driven purely electrically at up to 105 km/h – previously 70 km/h. With the eDrive button activated, it can even be driven purely electrically at up to 120 km/h. The purely electric range is given as 55 kilometers for the BMW i8 Coupe. The sports car is powered by a so-called hybrid-specific all-wheel drive. In other words, the combustion engine acts on the rear wheels and the electric motor on the front wheels.

BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid - test and driving report-driving

This enables the BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds. However, at 250 km/h it is over. The i8 draws its energy for the electric drive from a 11.6 kWh battery (originally 5.2 kWh in the first generation).

BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid - test and driving report-coupe

This is charged either via a type 2 charging cable or via an adapter cable with a protective contact plug to the household socket. Unfortunately, the BMW i8 does not take advantage of the charging speed of the Type 2 connection; because the sports car is simply not equipped for fast charging. According to the manufacturer, the battery can be charged with a maximum of 3.7 kilowatts. Around four and a half hours are needed to charge the battery to 100 percent of its capacity using domestic electricity.

Impressions from everyday life with the BMW i8 Coupe PHEV

One of the first challenges you have to face before you can drive away with the PHEV is getting into the sports car itself. In contrast to station wagons, SUVs or small cars, the BMW i8 Coupe doesn’t just have to be opened and closed. You notice it when you open the wing doors for the first time.

BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid - test and driving report-plug-in

That’s right, gullwing door or, to put it another way, a vehicle door that opens upwards with a stop in the roof area. You should always keep this in mind, since the search for a parking space starts on the 1st.291×1.942×4.689 mm (height x width x length) large vehicle can be a challenge anyway. Nevertheless, the i8 from BMW also means opening the door and entering, just one foot at a time.

BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid - test and driving report-test

However, once you sit in the cockpit of the partially electrified sports car, you don’t want to get out again so quickly. The two molded sports seats keep you firmly in place, even when you are moving towards a top speed of 250 km/h. Only the second-row seats seem a little superfluous; at least adult people are rather difficult to accommodate there. Which in itself is not the claim of the PHEV.

BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid - test and driving report-hybrid

We will go into the interior of the BMW i8 Coupe separately at a later date. It is important to mention that the i8 – according to today’s standards – has to do without some safety-related assistance systems, which cannot be ordered as an option. Not entirely understandable for a vehicle in this price range.

With the partially electrified sports car, for example, you have to do without adaptive cruise control and a lane departure warning system. Important and also available as a safety-relevant assistance system is the access and personal warning with deceleration function. Furthermore, an acoustic pedestrian protection is available, which generates a sound up to a speed of 30 km / h in order to draw attention to pedestrians and other road users to the BMW I8.

Flat, wide, long a sports car with character

The outer dimensions of 1.291 x 1.942 x 4.689 mm (height x width x length) speak for itself, you have a sports car standing in front of you. Floor close to slide on the asphalt. Accelerates at will leisurely or with full power. Who applies it and dropped a kickstart comes in 4.4 seconds from 0 to 100 km / h. Who only gently touches the accelerator pedal slides slowly.

BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid - test and driving report-plug-in

Fortunately, my concern that simply tapping the gas pedal is enough for the BMW sports car to shoot away with 275 kW/374 hp has not been confirmed. It would also be fatal, especially if you only want to drive out of your own driveway.

Incidentally, I also encountered the first challenge in our courtyard: parking and exiting. While the former worked quite well, pulling out of a parking space was definitely associated with a little cold sweat. Despite the reversing camera and an amazingly good overview from the cockpit, you are with a vehicle that is almost 160.000 euros costs a little more careful on the go.

BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid - test and driving report-coupe

In addition, as already mentioned in one of the previous sections, one should always remember that the BMW i8 comes with gullwing doors. Just opening it without enough space can cause ugly scratches in the paintwork of the PHEV. Does not have to be. Ultimately, however, this is only a matter of getting used to it, until it has become second nature.

BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid - test and driving report-driving

Despite the above-average width and length of the BMW i8 Coupe PHEV, you should not be under the illusion that you can expect a miracle of space. On the contrary. The driver and front passenger are given a wonderful amount of space and sit securely in the sports bucket seats of the i8, but the two seats in the second row can only be used to a limited extent. You can’t comfortably accommodate two more adults there. At most your own children; but then also without a child seat.

BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid - test and driving report-plug-in

The BMW i8 Coupe is also not the first choice for weekend shopping. The trunk is covered by a plain pane of glass, which can be opened from the cockpit or via the remote control. Then lift the protective cover and you have access to 154 liters of luggage space. In practice, two six-packs of water with 1.5 liters per bottle fit in there if the type 2 charging cable and the adapter cable with safety plug are also stored there. Completely emptied, you can certainly get a small suitcase in. Which would then be perfectly adequate for a weekend trip.

275 kW/374 hp system output – full throttle and away…

A sports car wants to be driven out. Not only in the thirties zone, where you always have to be careful not to touch the gas pedal too hard to avoid getting a ticket. With the BMW i8 it is of course no different in this case. Even if this can be whisper-quiet thanks to its electric drive – the acoustic Warton left out.

BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid - test and driving report-test

The transitions between purely electric drive and combustion engine are smooth and gentle, even with abrupt performance requirements. You can drive the BMW i8 purely electrically up to a maximum of 120 km/h, after which the combustion engine switches on. The interaction of the two drive technologies ensures maximum dynamics and gives the sporty BMW i8 Coupe consumption values of 1.8 liters/100 km, CO2 emissions of 42 g/km and a combined power consumption of 14.0 kWh/100 km – according to technical data from 09/2018.

In everyday life – mainly city traffic – we ended up with an average of around 7.7 liters to 8.0 liters. The combined power consumption of around 14.0 kWh/100 km has been confirmed.

The partially electrified sports car is powered by an electric motor on the front axle with a powerful 105 kW (143 hp). The rear axle is driven by a powerful BMW TwinPower Turbo 1.5-liter 3-cylinder petrol engine with a maximum output of 170 kW (231 hp) and up to 320 Nm of torque. Together, both types of drive have a system output of 275 kW/374 hp, which enables the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds. From 80 to 120 km/h in 3.4 seconds (4th. gear) or 4.0 seconds (5th. Gear).

Intelligent networking ensures efficient progress in every situation

The overall range of the sporty plug-in hybrid is 440 km. With the optional 42-liter tank (standard 30 liters), which beats with 100,00 Euro to be booked, you come to a total range of 600 km. Purely electrically, the BMW i8 can cover 55 km. Partly one can influence the consumption and thus also the reach of the BMW i8 Coupe by different driving modes. But of course, the vehicle characteristics can also select suitable for the driving situation.

BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid - test and driving report-coupe

Comfort, Eco Pro and Sports call the three driving modes, which are available to the driver of the plug-in hybrid. Purly electric driving is possible with up to 120 km / h and an everyday range of up to 40 km in Comfort mode. With the press of the EDRIVE button – directly below the start / stop button – the BMW i8 Coupe is set to drive purely electrically. This can be operated in the Comfort and Eco Pro mode, but not in sports mode. In Comfort mode, the BMW i8 then drives without support from the combustion engine until the battery power is almost exhausted. All displays have a blue background in these modes.

BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid - test and driving report-hybrid

The sport mode should not go unmentioned, with this not only a highly dynamic sports car feeling with maximum eBoost function is available, but the BMW i8 can also live out the driving situations for which it was created. In hybrid mode, it then uses all-wheel drive and the intelligent combination of two types of drive. In purely electric driving mode – with the eDrive button activated – the vehicle is driven purely via the front axle.

In everyday life, however, it turns out that you make the best choice with the comfort mode. Here the PHEV selects the best possible combination of electric drive and combustion engine for its own progress through the intelligent networking of various driving and assistance systems to increase efficiency. What is interesting is the fact that the BMW i8 Coupe, with active route guidance, matches the operating strategy of the engines to the route profile.

This enables the partially electrified vehicle from BMW to use sections of the route optimally for recuperation. According to the technical data, the sports car has an output of up to 60 kilowatts when coasting and when braking. The BMW i8 does not allow active intervention in the recuperation strength, as is sometimes known from other electric cars and PHEVs.

BMW i8 Coupe vehicle key: The highlight in pocket format

Design starts small. BMW i has also understood this and brings with it a very special vehicle key for the partially electrified sports car. The key for the BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid sports car has an integrated 2.2-inch color touch display. On this it shows, among other things, the remaining range, both for combustion and electric drives, as well as the total range.

BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid - test and driving report-plug-in

In addition, the key informs the owner whether the battery of his PHEV is fully charged and whether the entire possible electric range of almost 55 kilometers is available. As we know it from smartphones, other functions are indicated by dots in the lower part of the display and can be controlled with a swipe gesture. Especially in summer it is a good thing to start the air conditioning from the apartment. With just a push of a button.

Charging made easy, it’s that simple!

If you want to charge your BMW i8, you are offered different options. This is charged either via a type 2 charging cable or via an adapter cable with a protective contact plug to the household socket.

BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid - test and driving report-test

Unfortunately, the BMW i8 does not take advantage of the charging speed of the Type 2 connection; because the sports car is simply not equipped for fast charging. According to the manufacturer, the battery can be charged with a maximum of 3.7 kilowatts. Around four and a half hours are needed to charge the battery to 100 percent of its capacity using domestic electricity.

BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid - test and driving report-coupe

The charging time for an 80% charge of the battery is less than two hours at 3.6 kW (16 A / 230 V), or less than three hours for 100%.

Alternatively, you can also use the recuperation capability of the BMW i8 Coupe. According to the technical data, the sports car has an output of up to 60 kilowatts when coasting and when braking. The BMW i8 does not allow active intervention in the recuperation strength, as is sometimes known from other electric cars and PHEVs.

BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid - test and driving report-test

And yet the recuperation performance is amazing. During a short test drive – half an hour on country roads and motorways – you could generate an electric range of 18 kilometers purely through recuperation.

Exterior and interior of the BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid in detail

Hopefully, first experiences, described impressions and included photos have given you an impression of the plug-in hybrid from BMW. Now let’s delve a little more together and take a closer look at the exterior and interior of the partially electrified sports car.

I’m starting with our test vehicle, which found its way to us in the paintwork crystal white pearl effect with accent BMW i blue and the upholstery natural leather exclusive with fabric accent E-Copper (EC/AM). Base price 135.000.00 euros

The following elements were found as special equipment in the BMW i8 Coupe:

    • Bigger fuel tank
    • 20 inch BMW i LMR radial spoke 516 Bicolor / MB
    • Brake calipers painted
    • comfort access
    • storage package
    • Ceramic application for controls
    • Acoustic pedestrian protection
    • light package
    • BMW laser light
    • BMW Head Up Display
    • DAB tuner
    • harman/kardon hi-fi loudspeaker system
    • Apple CarPlay preparation
    • entertainment
    • aerodynamic package
    • BMW i interior design Accaro

Thus, the test car from BMW comes to a total price of 158.000.00 euros. I will go into the general pricing and the impact of the environmental bonus on the BMW plug-in hybrid in a later point.

    Exterior: Attention is guaranteed!

With dimensions of 1.291mm (height) x 1.942mm (width) x 4.689 mm (length) it quickly becomes clear that you are not looking at a 0815 PHEV. The BMW i8 Coupe is wider, longer and above all flatter than other plug-in hybrids. A sports car through and through, which knows how to attract attention with its looks alone.

BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid - test and driving report-test

If you are not yet convinced, just open the doors. Or rather the gullwing doors. Gimmicks like opening the driver’s and passenger’s door at the same time, even if it’s just for a photo, have to be there.

BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid - test and driving report-test

But watch out, you have to learn how to get in. Because the i8 requires a different rhythm of movement to get in than with conventional bodies. If you slide awkwardly into the partially electrified coupe the first and second time, then by the third time at the latest it has become second nature.

BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid - test and driving report-coupe

In addition to the gullwing doors – as a defining element – the BMW i8 knows how to impress with its progressive lines. The sports car promises pure dynamics. Just looking at the sporty front, which is adorned in the middle by the double kidney grille flanked by full LED headlights, reveals that you want to do everything with this vehicle. Just don’t brake.

BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid - test and driving report-hybrid

Starting on the bonnet, a V-shaped black belt runs across the entire vehicle and underlines the flat silhouette of the PHEV. Furthermore, the designers of the BMW i8 Coupe made sure that the airflow was optimized – which is reflected in the so-called Streamflow design of the Coupe.

I also count the trunk as part of the exterior of the plug-in hybrid from BMW i. If you can call it that. You can’t really put that much in this one. This holds 154 liters.

BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid - test and driving report-coupe

Or to explain it with an example from everyday life: Two six-packs of 1.5 liters of water as well as type 2 charging and adapter cables for charging the BMW i8 find their place there. For a long weekend for two, it’s definitely enough with the help of the back seat.

BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid - test and driving report-hybrid

    The i8 had 195/50 R20 93 W XL tires on the front axle; forged on 7 J x 20 aluminium. On the rear axle there were 215/45 R20 95 W XL tires with 7.5 J x 20 aluminum.

BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid - test and driving report-coupe

Interior: Sporty through and through – also in the interior

Get in and drop. In an interior that, like the exterior of the vehicle, is sporty through and through, modern with a touch of elegance. The dynamic lines of the exterior design are skilfully picked up and stretches across the entire cockpit, giving it a futuristic and athletic character.

BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid - test and driving report-test

The focus of the i8 is or sits on the driver. The center console is tilted towards it. Operating elements are arranged intuitively to ensure maximum driver orientation and the best possible overview.

Thanks to electrically adjustable sports seats, you don’t lose your footing even at high speeds and can be sure of arriving safely at your destination. Only a seat cooling system would be desirable in summer; Seat heating for the winter, however, is available.

Extremely appealing is the upholstery of the vehicle in natural leather exclusively with fabric accent E-Copper (E-C / AM). This presents itself not only very highly processed, but also brings the elegance mentioned in the partially electrified coupe.

The design of the ads changes depending on the driving mode (blue for comfort, red for sports), and of course charging and range display houses in the field of view. Our test car also has built the full-color BMW head-up display.

This displays all the data relevant to the journey in the driver’s field of vision via optical projection, thereby increasing concentration on what is happening on the road. Among other things, the current speed, navigation instructions, speed limit info including no-overtaking display and telephone and entertainment lists are displayed. Incredibly practical in everyday life; because you don’t have to take your eyes off the road.

Prizes & promotion through environmental bonus for the BMW i8 Coupe

If the previous impressions of the BMW i8 Coupe have convinced you, then it is probably time to take a look at the prices. We also don’t want to ignore the support provided by the environmental bonus for the plug-in hybrid.

BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid - test and driving report-driving

The electric car purchase premium was introduced on 18.05.Adopted in the cabinet in 2016 and extended at the end of March 2019. The actual purchase premium varies in this case. For example, buyers of purely battery-powered vehicles receive a subsidy of 4.000 Euro, driver of a hybrid vehicle with electric and internal combustion engine receive a premium of 3.000 €. The hybrid vehicles is decisive whether they can be loaded on the socket.

In the case of the plug-in hybrid of BMW, there are these 3.000 Euro environmental bonus not. What is due to the fact that the list price above the specified limit of 60.000 Euro is.

BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid - test and driving report-coupe

Below we throw a look at the list prices of the partially electrified BMW i8 Coupe . It is the recommended retail price of the manufacturer in Euro / ex works. As of July 2019.

    • BMW i8 Coupe – 138.000,00 Euro
    • BMW i8 Roadster – 155.000,00 Euro

The test car we have received with a list price of 138.000,00 EURO therefore. Furthermore, 1.750,00 Euro for the paint and 18.250,00 Euro for the special equipment due. This results in a gross list price of 158.000.00 euros.

Conclusion on the test of the BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid

A week with the BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid was definitely too short. Too short to drive all the routes and tours that you can imagine with this vehicle. Too short to drive all the racing-mad friends around a bit. Too short to test the limits of the BMW i8 Coupe. Since there is an inhibition threshold right at the beginning.

BMW i8 Coupe plug-in hybrid - test and driving report-hybrid

The BMW i8 was not the typical plug-in hybrid and yet it knew how to convince with its comparatively low consumption, its sporty driving style and its appearance. I didn’t get close to the standard consumption of the technical data sheet. But I was pleasantly surprised at how economical the partially electrified sports car can be on the road in everyday life. Provided you dare to venture into the narrow streets of our town with the wide, flat PHEV.
