At IAA 2019 in Frankfurt, nothing special was to be expected in terms of battery powered e-mobility at BMW. On the other hand, with the BMW I Hydrogen Next, a hydrogen study was presented, which anticipates a small series of fuel cell X5, which is planned for 2022. Also, there was the BMW Concept 4 to see. Definitely an eye-catcher, but no info, whether this electrified and to what extent comes from.
Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, gave at least a view of the electrified future of the company. So it is planned that by the end of 2021, a total of a million electrified vehicles had to have brought to the road. According to Zipse you already drive at the top of the e-mobility. “No manufacturer has delivered more electrified vehicles in Germany to customers in 2019 than the BMW Group. And in Norway, three of four new cars of the BMW Group have an electrified drive, “says Zipse.
Located worldwide, Zipse sees a different pace in the next decade in the development of e-mobility. Especially in the points infrastructure, driving profiles of customers and political framework conditions are available which markets can shape and become. Thus, according to forecasts of the BMW Group, the customer demand should ensure that in 2030 in China over 50 percent of new registrations in the premium segment will be purely battery electric vehicles (BEV). At the same time, this share is expected in Europe only about half. The USA as the world’s second largest vehicle market should be at the level of Europe.
“The BMW Group is a global company. We will be able to offer our customers all relevant drive types: conventional engines that set standards in efficiency, battery electrical drives as well as plug-in hybrids and in the future also the hydrogen fuel cell. We are thus in an excellent strategic position to meet the challenges of mobility of the future and climate change.”- Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of BMW AG
For BMW, however, it seems to be clear that the hydrogen fuel cell comes. At the latest in the second half of the next decade, demand will be noticeably rise, so the car manufacturer from Munich. Therefore, from 2022 one will bring a test fleet of fuel cell vehicles on the road. At the IAA, the company introduces the BMW I Hydrogen Next development vehicle, which we consider more precisely in a future article.
The pace would continue to keep high and increase, as announced in June, so zipse. The number of 25 electrified models announced for 2025 will already have the company in 2023 and thus two years earlier. More than half of these 25 models will be fully electric. BMW is sure that electromobility can make a central contribution to climate protection. Decisive is the customer from the point of view of the BMW Group: because a technology can only be effective if customers want to desire and use.
“We want to significantly reduce emissions from emissions. We have to start there where we achieve the biggest effect. That’s why the question is the focus: which drives, technologies and services want our customers in the future? And how do we achieve the best result for climate protection? Clear: We are committed to the Parisian Climate Agreement.”
In the context of the # NextGen event at the end of June, ZIPSE predecessor Kruger emphasized that his own vision is clear: “Sustainable mobility, sustainable”. At BMW, BMW was set to buy only electricity from renewable energy sources worldwide from the year 2020 worldwide. This would like to show that one perceives its own social responsibility – in all its facets.
“We confess well for emission-free driving. At the same time, we are on our entrepreneurial responsibility towards our employees, shareholders and investors, “so Kruger continue. At this statement, Zipse continues to hold further.

Beautiful words from the BMW CEO ..
I wonder how BMW can know which drive your customers want – me z.b. Have you never asked, although I have been going on BMW since 1997 and I’ve been interested in the BMW E1 in 1991 ..
A year ago, I finally acquired a Renault Zoe R110 as a “everyday vehicle” (price / performance) and I am a conviction after 5000 km at the Tacho: More car does not need man to get comfortably from A to B ( And the burner BMW is now only driven by woman and daughter).
The faith is still not about climate change, if you predict only 25% electric for new registrations for 2030. And to designate the 4er BMW with electric powertrain as a great independent electric car, is plenty of lift. Should probably justify the price of 70k.
Even the cover picture in the article says everything!
The BMW does not want to build a sensible e-car.
Lifted as EH and ever, rip-off means the motto.
What do we want: a middle class station wagon with 400-500 km range, by no means via motorized by 25000 euros.
