The automotive supplier Bosch now also offers company factory equipment for battery production from a single source – from individual components to software solutions to complete assembly lines. This is from a communication of the company. To the pilot customers is therefore Webasto.
“We understand the ‘product battery’ and know how it needs to be manufactured,” says Bosch Managing Director Rolf Najork. By entering the new business area, Bosch wants to achieve around 250 million euros in sales annually from 2025. The manufacturing know-how also uses Bosch in its own works, it says. In Eisenach now starts the series production of second generation 48 volt batteries.
The need for batteries is enormous: According to the Federal Ministry of Economics, experts assume that demand for lithium-ion batteries of around 200 GWh in 2019 rises to more than 2000 GWh by 2030. Over 60 percent is currently accounting for electromobility. Bosch has according to own information both experience in the development of batteries for vehicles, as well as for e-bikes, power tools and kitchen utensils.
For the pioneers in the production of battery packs, Webasto counts. The company has been involved in electromobility since 2016 and, in addition to high-volume heaters and charging solutions, also relies on battery systems for electrified vehicles. The battery production in the German work in Schierling is a blueprint for new production sites – for example in Korean Dangjin, it says. Bosch deliver automated assembly lines for welding and gluing the battery cells.
Thanks to a sophisticated line concept, there are no impurities by particles during processing during processing. The cell stacks are assembled with automated robot handling in a two-stage process consisting of dispenser technology and laser welding. With a comprehensive security concept, it is then possible to realize the electrical connection of the battery module using a highly dynamic and precise laser welding process.
When building factories, Bosch acts as a general contractor and suppliers of individual components and software solutions. Bosch develops plants, machinery, hardware and software for manufacturing battery modules and packs built from cylindrical, prismatic or pouch cells and used in electric vehicles. There are screwed, welding or adhesive processes used to firmly connect the cells.
