bp and Piaggio join forces for “more e-mobility”

It doesn’t always have to be new electric car models, unusual concept cars or extraordinary new technological advances that make our world a little greener. With the Piaggio Ape E-City, the Piaggio Group wanted to enter the Indian market for electric vehicles. The special feature, the Ape E-City should be on par with its combustion engine alternative in terms of price. Together with bp, they now want to ensure even “more electromobility” on the road.

Because the joint cooperation between the British mineral oil company and the Italian vehicle manufacturer aims to develop integrated services such as charging e-vehicles, battery replacement services and vehicle leasing. Asia and Europe as potential promotional rooms. With this comprehensive range of services, the two companies adopt the market around two- and three-wheeled electric vehicles in Europe, India and Asia.

They have decided for this segment, as they emboss the most electrified vehicle class worldwide. The newly formed consortium quarters the already electrically operated volume on 250 million vehicles worldwide, which is a 25 percent share of the global fleet already in circulation. 44 percent of sales are already electrical operated vehicles in these classes. It goes to BP and Piaggio can be assumed that the proportion of electric vehicles sold will rise to more than 80 percent by 2040. This would triple the number of two- and three-wheel electric vehicles worldwide to 750 million units.

By combining Piaggio‘s know-how and capabilities in electric vehicle production and infrastructure management with bp’s global reach, the aim is to support the spread of electrically powered two- and three-wheelers worldwide. The aim is to reduce traffic congestion in cities and reduce pollution in urban areas.

It will start, under the flag of the subsidiary Jio-bp, in India by offering charging and battery swapping stations and developing services such as “Battery as a Service” (BaaS) – leasing, management and recycling of vehicle batteries – and “Vehicle as a Service” (VaaS) – leasing, repair, maintenance and energy management of electric vehicles.

Because the focus is deliberately on India, the largest single market for two-wheelers in the world, where Jio-bp and Piaggio are already working on the development of specific solutions for electric vehicles. India’s plans are to become an e-mobility hub, with Li-ion battery manufacturing facilities and solar-electric charging infrastructure. From 2030, only electric cars will be on the road.
