Cornering behavior in all models takes a lot of getting used to
Not only politicians are currently discussing cargo bikes a lot, the transport talents are also very popular, at least among city dwellers. They are available for many purposes and in many designs: with two or three wheels, with a luggage rack at the rear or with a transport box at the front, for transporting beer crates or for children.
Five three-wheel models with e-bikes-The ADAC automobile club has now tested the technology and various steering systems, with a particular focus on the transport of children.
The test winners are the two most expensive models, and both have tilting technology. The Chike e-kids model comes off best with a grade of 2.1. Driving behavior, brakes, the agile and direct steering and the transport box, which is particularly well suited for transporting children, are convincing here.

Chike e-kids: The test winner (grade 2.1)
The second bike with incline technology also got the grade good. The Butchers & Bicycles MK1-E automatic (grade 2.4) is the most expensive model in the test, but it is not as agile in the corners as the Chike. However, the high-quality, comprehensive equipment with a powerful motor, short charging time, stable brakes and belt drive was convincing.
Butchers & Bicycles MK1-E automatic: grade 2.4
The Vogue Carry 3 failed with poor quality. In terms of braking performance, it does not even meet the minimum requirements for e-cargo bikes and therefore had to be devalued. In general, the brakes, especially those of heavy cargo bikes, should be designed so that there are always enough safety reserves even when fully loaded and when driving downhill. But the worst lighting in the test field and a long battery charging time of around 7.5 hours also contributed to the poor performance.
Vogue Carry 3: Bad brakes and lighting
In the midfield are the Nihola e-family – a model with stub axle steering – and with the Babboe GO-E, next to the Vogue, another wheel with turntable steering. Both cargo bikes achieved the test rating "satisfactory".

Babboe GO-E
E-cargo bikes are heavier than normal e-bikes and therefore have a shorter range. In the test, the average range was between 40 (Babboe) and just under 65 kilometers for the Nihola; no model reached 80 kilometers:
The loading times also differ. The Nihola takes the longest to fully charge (almost eight hours), while the Butchers & Bicycles model only takes 3.5 hours.
In the opinion of the testers, all models take a lot of getting used to. Especially when cornering you have to reduce your speed significantly and adjust your posture, otherwise you run the risk of tipping over with the load. Test drives before buying are therefore a must – also to find out which steering system suits your own preferences.
Before buying, you should also be clear about what will be transported with the cargo bike. Because shopping, heavy loads and children make different demands on the bike, and not every model can do everything.
According to the ADAC, manufacturers should improve the seat belt situation for child transport. The protection of children’s heads in the event of an accident also still needs to be optimized. Regardless of this, the child and driver should always wear a helmet for safety reasons.
