ChargeX wants to convert every parking space into a charging station-chargex

You want nothing less than to convert every parking space into a loading space. At least that’s what Tobias Wagner, founder and managing director of ChargeX, said in an interview for podcast to understand. This is to be achieved by the so-called “multiple socket for e-cars”, which requires almost no electrician and can be installed by anyone in around 60 seconds. Sounds too good to be true? ChargeX took the principle of the multiple plug as a model and then transferred it to the charging of e-cars. This is how the three founders Michael Masnitza, Johannes Engeln and Tobias Wagner developed a kind of multiple plug for charging stations. Launched in 2018, the start-up completed its first round of financing in the mid-six-digit range in January 2019.

As mentioned at the beginning, ChargeX is developing a new type of charging infrastructure for electric cars that enables the intelligent charging of multiple electric cars for use in commercial properties and apartment buildings. The advantage of the Aqueduct charging system is that it can be expanded to include additional charging points if required (plug & play) and, thanks to integrated load management, ensures that the available connected load is not exceeded. An intelligent charging algorithm uses individual mobility data to charge the electric cars with a time delay and as required. Now in the 2. Arriving in the next generation, it can be installed as an 11 or 22 kW charging point. An electrician is only required for the first module, after which it can simply be connected by “plugs” and removed. The only limit here is the respective application.

It should be noted that the e-cars connected to it do not all charge at the same time with the same power, but are controlled by the logic of the system. As Tobias explains in the conversation, the vehicles are first charged to a common level (60-85 km range) and then charged in parallel. However, after three years in the e-mobility business, it was realized that it was a challenge to distribute a limited resource (charging current) in such a way that everyone was satisfied, so this was tackled as well.

For this reason, they have created their own app, which is intended to bring the appropriate flexibility into charging processes. This is controlled by a prioritization during charging. But just so that the respective driver does not experience priority at every charging process. Because he has to use the in-app Currency named Drops. Each driver that returns to Chargeex charging systems gets a drops loading budget that it can use for prioritized shop. If you behave network, you can later load faster later.

To prevent the vision of a network service currency for loading electric cars to relieve the network accordingly.   1. The idea is basically good. It’s a solution for private space, not public space, but there’s a lot of potential there. The system has enough time, especially if you stay the night like in a hotel or are there for nine hours during the day, like at work. For a hotel it would be e.g.B. charming to be able to specifically intervene in the prioritization.

    The only question is how much it costs. The counter-proposal would be a high-voltage socket per parking space, which only delivers 3.7 kW. This would save the costs for the intelligence and transfer the costs for the technology to the user, but that would certainly be fair enough, especially since it is not uncommon to have the appropriate equipment. Every influencer advertises the Juice Booster, or at Porsche, for example, something like this is standard.

  2. In September after the IAA, we already installed 4 systems for our underground car park, each with 4 wall boxes (=16 wall boxes) from Aqueduct Lvl.2 ordered and are eagerly waiting for the delivery, because the period of the KfW funding commitment is slowly running out.
