The electrification does not stop at the really big things either: several American manufacturers have already announced that from 2024 or 2025 they will only deliver more or mostly fully electric models where V6 or V8 were previously installed. These include the Ford Mustang models, the Dodge Challengers or the Chevrolet Camaros. Chevrolet will also offer the flagship Silverado as an all-electric variant from 2023. The pick-up with 664 hp should be able to cover a range of around 640 km and pull up to 4.5 tons.
Chevrolet heralds a paradigm shift. The Silverados are often driven in America in the heavy-duty version with a 6.6 l V8 engine and are considered the epitome of the American way of life. However, the Silverado EV does not have to hide, as the premium version only needs 4.5 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h thanks to 780 Nm of torque. The payload (up to 590 kg) and the traction (up to 4.5 tons) are much more important to the Americans anyway. The EV can be charged at fast charging stations with up to 350 kW.
The Silverado EV is built on the improved GM Ultium EV platform. This is “an essential prerequisite for future-oriented pick-up performance for both fleets and commercial customers.’ said Steve Hill, Chevrolet vice president. The basic WT model is intended for fleet customers and starts with 510 hp and 615 Nm of torque. It pulls up to 3.6 tons and has a maximum payload of 544 kg. With the optional “Max Tow Package” the pulling force can be increased to up to 9 tons!
The premium model RST also comes with steering rear wheels, automatic air suspension with 50 mm spring deflection, adjustable loading area, 17″ LCD infotainment screen and 11″ driver instruments and head-up display. It also supports Super Cruise, the first hands-free driver assistance system, with more than 200.000 miles of designated roads in the US and Canada may be driven in autopilot mode. The loading area is extended by a lockable and waterproof frunk in the front of the vehicle, which holds a large hard case.
“With the Silverado EV, Chevrolet offers its customers a real workhorse that supports them in the best possible way in the transition to electrified fleets and thus in achieving their sustainability goals.said Ed Peper, Vice President of GM Fleet. The first WT model will come onto the market in spring 2023, with the RST following in the fall. Prices start at around 50.000 dollars (44.000 euros).
