For the tenth anniversary, Volvo has optimized the XC90. The Swede still cuts a fine figure in the field of large SUVs – and not just because it is cheap.
E.r is by far the longest-serving Volvo and even a senior in the large SUV club. A study of the first Swedish SUV made its debut in 2000, and the XC90 started as a series model exactly ten years ago. In keeping with the birthday party, the Gothenburg locals treated their bestseller – for several years the XC90 was the world’s best-selling Volvo and the most important Swedish export product – a little fine-tuning of looks and equipment.
Little changes in the exterior
Outwardly, bumpers and wheelhouses painted in body color, modified front and rear lighting units, additional colors and new optional 19-inch light-alloy wheels indicate the latest generation of the seven-seater crossover.
As with other Volvo models, an onboard emergency call system application is now also available for the XC90, which enables various vehicle functions to be accessed with a smartphone. Either two five-cylinder diesels or one six-cylinder gasoline engine in a power range from 163 hp to 243 hp provide propulsion.
The Volvo is significantly cheaper
Comparatively modest values in the environment of powerful competitors such as Audi Q7, BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz ML-Class or VW Touareg. But the Volvo scores with significantly lower prices, which start at 41,190 euros for the entry-level diesel with front-wheel drive and at 47,740 euros for the more powerful diesel with all-wheel drive.
Volvo flagship with plenty of space
Its space-saving transverse engine concept still enables exemplary space. On the front rows of seats, the Volvo flagship offers ample space that is almost comparable to the lounge comfort of large vans. Only the third row seats, which can be lowered into the floor of the car, are suitable for children alone.
At the same time, the Nordmann conveys that castle feeling of heavy off-road vehicles, which is not only appreciated by women. In the case of the Volvo, this is not unjustified, because the occupant accident protection even extends to the third row of seats, which is sometimes neglected. But the SUV has to cut back on a classic off-road vehicle talent: the trailer load is only a maximum of 2,250 kilograms.
Consumption below standard cycle
At first glance, the standard consumption values of the three engines, which are 8.2 and 8.3 liters of diesel for the two diesel engines and 11.4 liters of super for the six-cylinder gasoline engine, are less convincing in the competitive environment. On the other hand, during test drives in the wintry Alpine country, we determined gasoline consumption that was sometimes up to half a liter below the otherwise often completely unrealistic values of the standard cycle.
The Volvo hovers over the highway
We were also positively surprised by the still sovereign travel comfort of the gentle giant, which is extremely popular especially in North America. Instead of fashionable, sporty hardness, the Swedes are characterized by a comparatively soft chassis setting. The big Volvo almost hovers over the autobahn and it also smooths potholes and bumpy roads with surprising ease. If necessary, it can still be driven around the corner in a sporty, brisk manner, the higher side inclination alone then heralds the comfort-oriented chassis.
The good noise insulation of the light and airy passenger area fits in with this. Wind and driving noises penetrate the interior only in a pleasantly muffled manner, but the diesels can still be heard clearly after a cold start or under full load. Practical in city traffic is the handiness and clarity of the seven-seater, which is 4.81 meters long but only 1.90 meters wide. A plus point not only in narrow parking garages and narrow passages.
The freshly made-up Swede may not be able to compete with the much younger competition in the dynamic disciplines, but the XC90 is more recommended than ever as a mature and comfortable family vehicle.
