Toyota is the big winner of the 2010 VCD environmental list with its hybrid cars. But VW is getting closer and closer to the Japanese.

Toyota tops the 2010 auto-environment list with the Prius and Auris Hybrid models. The ranking is created annually by the Verkehrsclub Deutschland (VCD), which, according to its own statement, is for a "More environmentally and socially compatible mobility" begins.

The two Japanese hybrid models scored 7.53 out of ten possible points in the mix of fuel consumption, noise and the type of pollutants the vehicle emits. Also in third place is the iQ 1.0 VVT-i, a model from Toyota. Another hybrid model follows with the Honda Insight.

The VW Polo 1.2 TDI BlueMotion in fifth place is the best-placed German vehicle with 6.95 points. Nissan Pixo and Suzuki Alto are each with 6.63 points ahead of the Smart fortwo cdi. The Honda Civic Hybrid and the Seat Ibiza 1.2 TDI complete the top ten on the VCD environmental list. Ten points would be awarded for the VCD with CO2 emissions of 60 grams per kilometer – which would correspond to a fuel consumption of around 2.5 liters (petrol) or 2.3 liters (diesel) per 100 kilometers.

In the compact class, three hybrids lead the field. Here the Auris Hybrid is ahead of the two Honda models Insight and Civic. The best German model is the Golf 1.6 TDI BlueMotion in fourth place. When it comes to family cars, the Prius is ahead, followed by Skoda Fabia Greenline 1.2 TDI and Seat Ibiza ST 1.2 TDI.

In the seven-seater category, the VCD only listed five vehicles. The VW Touran performed best with the 1.4 TSI Ecofuel. The gas engine is in front of a TDI and a gasoline engine in the same model. High-end cars and cars that emit more than 180 grams of CO2 per kilometer are not rated by the VCD.

Fourth and fifth places went to the Opel Zafira, one with a natural gas engine and one with a diesel engine. The rating of the "climate best" Vehicles, i.e. those with the absolutely lowest CO2 emissions, are led by the Smart fortwo CDI with 86 g / km, ahead of the Polo TDI Bluemotion with 87 g / km. This is followed by the two Toyota hybrids as well as the Seat Ibiza 1.2 TDI and the Skoda Fabia with the same engine. All four emit 89 g / km CO2 each.

In addition to the individual models, the VCD also rates the manufacturers’ environmental commitment. Toyota and VW share first place. This is followed by Daimler / Smart, Audi and BMW / Mini.
