The ADAC tested the Passat TSI EcoFuel in April 2009 in natural gas operation. He was the only one to get five stars with 92 points: 110 hp, 1390 cc displacement, consumptionh: 4.89 kg, CO2 emissions: 133.6 g / km. Since the new motor vehicle tax has made CO2 emissions a saving factor, a look at the relevant tables has also made economic sense. Especially if you don’t want to buy a small car. In the middle class, Insignia EcoFlex and Passat EcoFuel show what alternative potential they have. And which one doesn’t.

D.he good conscience is based on the number 120. Whoever can offer less has won. Whoever lies above it gets the buck. What is meant is the carbon dioxide emissions from cars. At the moment, the majority of manufacturers have rather bad cards: New cars from German companies average 163 grams per kilometer. So do we all have to drive small cars to protect the environment? No, because VW and Opel are starting with new savings concepts in the middle class. It is not the worst idea to start saving here, as most company cars in Germany are like the VW Passat or Opel Insignia.

Up until now, if you wanted to buy a particularly economical mid-range car, you couldn’t get past the Passat BlueMotion. An average consumption of 5.2 liters of diesel was for a long time unbeatable for this size of car. For the 2009 model year, VW once again carried out fine-tuning work on the Spar Passat and now set the benchmark with a consumption of 4.9 liters. But the Passat is no longer unrivaled. Because Opel promises fuel consumption that is only 0.3 liters higher for the Insignia EcoFlex – with an engine that with 160 hp outperforms that of the Passat by 50 hp.

Opel pursues a different savings concept than VW with the somewhat sluggish BlueMotion: With a significantly reduced consumption of 0.6 liters compared to the basic version, the performance of the Insignia Ecoflex should not suffer. This was achieved by fine-tuning the aerodynamics, engine and transmission. Even from idling speed, the Insignia pulls through beefy, no wonder with 350 Newton meters of torque. And when it comes to overtaking, it goes a step further: thanks to the overboost function, the force can be increased to 380 Newton meters for 15 seconds. A few years ago you would have needed a Mercedes S500 for this. Much more important than the standard consumption of 5.2 liters, however, is that the practical consumption also remains within limits. On its first test drive, the Insignia consumed an average of 5.1 liters per 100 kilometers.

Driving was not particularly economical, and otherwise the Insignia demands only a few compromises. Only the suspension comfort suffers a little from the hard Michelin fuel-saving tires specially developed for the EcoFlex. It’s actually a shame, because otherwise the Insignia is at the forefront of its class: the workmanship, space in the front and driving behavior don’t need to shy away from comparison. The only thing that the Opel can’t keep up with is the feeling of space on the back seat bench. The flat roof prevents such lush expanses as in the Passat.

Of course, VW does not want to leave the field without a fight. TSI EcoFuel is the name of the magic weapon: Volkswagen combines a small 1.4-liter engine with natural gas drive and turbocharging. The slack draft of earlier natural gas engines is effectively refreshed. Like a diesel, the engine pushes the car vigorously even at low engine speeds. The performance is on a par with the Insignia EcoFlex. Nevertheless, the natural gas Passat has one advantage: the engine remains significantly quieter than any diesel. The rest is familiar Passat fare – the best workmanship, plenty of space on all seats and a well-balanced chassis.

The Passat TSI EcoFuel is unbeatable when it comes to environmental protection. With a consumption of 4.6 kilograms of natural gas, it emits only 120 grams of CO2. It is not for nothing that this Passat was the first car to achieve five stars in the ADAC Eco test and relegated the front-runner of recent years, the Toyota Prius, to second place. This makes the Passat currently the most environmentally friendly car in Europe by ADAC standards. You can’t beat the natural gas drive at the checkout either. From July, the EcoFuel will only cost 28 euros in taxes per year (Insignia EcoFlex: 222 euros at 136 g / km CO2). And thanks to the low price of natural gas, the Passat costs significantly less than a diesel, even when it is running.

To do this, you have to dig deeper into your pockets for the natural gas Passat than when buying an eco-insignia. VW demands 30,525 euros, Opel is satisfied with 27,500 euros. This means that the economy version is also 2755 euros cheaper than the other 160 PS diesels, because they are only available from the more expensive edition equipment.

A disadvantage of the Passat is the low density of natural gas filling stations. In Germany you can get the alternative fuel at only 840 stations, in comparison to this, the spread of LPG with 5040 filling stations is much greater.

Both cars have one thing in common: They offer driving pleasure without regrets. The engines are powerful, there is enough space for families, and they are affordable – this is what alternatives to economical small cars can look like.
