This concept car aims to show that Peugeot’s future is anything but boring. The Concept 508 Peugeot Sport Engineered Neo-Performance is a further development of the Peugeot 508 Hybrid Sedan. With the concept vehicle, the French car manufacturer brings to life a vehicle that delivers high performance with low emissions and offers astonishing performance standards, combined with an elegant, sporty design.
“Electrification offers a wonderful opportunity to develop new driving experiences. We create a “neo-performance”, new sources of energy, new features, new territories, new challenges…. Pure joy for only 49g CO2/km! – Jean-Philippe Imparato, CEO of the Peugeot brand
Concept 508 Peugeot Sport Engineered Neo-Performance combines experience from several vehicles
The Concept 508 Peugeot Sport Engineered Neo-Performance marks the beginning of the development of a new range of convincing electric vehicles. For this partially electrified concept vehicle, the automobile manufacturer used the experience gained from two groundbreaking electric concept vehicles.
For one, it takes advantage of the highly efficient 208 HYBRID FE (2013) that achieved GTi-level performance with emissions and fuel consumption lower than the smallest combustion engine on the market at the time. After a series of tweaks, a CO2/km score of 46g was achieved, with a 0-100km/h performance in just 8s.
Furthermore, experience with the 308 R HYbrid Concept (2015) is used. This demanded absolute performance: 500 hp total output, 730 Nm torque and 0 to 100 km/h in just 4 seconds.
Two electric motors, a PureTech petrol engine enable the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds
In the Concept 508 Peugeot Sport Engineered Neo-Performance, the engineers have combined the power of three engines (a PureTech 200, a 110 HP electric motor at the front and a 200 HP engine at the rear), two power sources and an all-wheel drive system for spectacular acceleration in the gearbox and developed a maximum torque of 500 Nm. These characteristics make the concept car a true machine.
It goes from zero to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds. From 80 to 120 km/h in 2.5 seconds, the electric vehicle sprints from 80 to 180 km/h in 9.3 seconds. The top speed is 250 km/h.
The extraordinary chassis of the new Peugeot 508 has been specially modified to lower the body height, accommodate new damping kits and widen the front track by 24 mm and the rear track by 12 mm. The precision steering has also been improved to offer additional efficiency and more driving pleasure at the wheel.
“Electrification has allowed us to develop the sportiest line ever seen from PEUGEOT! We dreamed of doing it and now we have made our dream come true.– Bruno Famin, CEO Peugeot Sport
All the benefits of a plug-in hybrid vehicle are offered without compromising on performance. The battery (11.8kWh) delivers true fuel efficiency and 100% electric mode up to 50km (WLTP). In Sport mode, thermal and electrical energy sources can be combined up to 190 km/h, allowing impressive acceleration in the gearbox in all conditions!
Peugeot sees its own future as electric
As early as October 2018, the brand informed Autocar that the development of diesel engines would be stopped for the time being. At least until the market has stabilized and you can tell whether demand is falling further or picking up again. In keeping with this, two new plug-in hybrid engines were presented a month earlier: HYBRID and HYBRID4 (all-wheel drive). From autumn 2019, these will complement the range of engines for the new PEUGEOT 508 and 508 SW and the PEUGEOT 3008 SUV.
A first glimpse of Peugeot‘s master plan for their own future was already available in April last year..
