More one year after its appearance, the mid-engine corvette C8 finally comes to Germany. The wait was worth it. The Vette offers a lot of sports car fun for money-Site is testing the European version for the first time.

Forty years they have dreamed Chevrolet from the Corvette as a mid -engine sports car. Makes sense. Finally, the arrangement of packing the engine in front of the rear axle is a royal solution for real driving dynamics and how it is as quickly as possible about the corners, you also know beyond the Atlantic. But as it is sometimes, prototypes were built and stamped again. After all, the Vette does its thing pretty well with the long hood. And the silhouette is one of the automotive classics. But in the eighth generation it is finally so far. The Little Red Corvette so lovingly sung by Prince is built according to the mid -motor principle.

Corvette now with a mid -engine

Now the Ami racer from the side view is more like the European sports car, which significantly improves clarity forward. The technicians also laid a hand in the body. It is around ten percent stiffer than before.

And the C7 was anything but a soft bread. In order to achieve this, the Americans do not compromise and manufacture, if necessary parts such as the spring leg dye plus adjacent to the back in the "Dry Cast"-Process itself. The long interior dividing strut with the many buttons is also a result of the effort to prevent the torches of the body as much as possible. Finally, you can also remove the roof on the coupe and stow in the rear trunk. The weight of 1665 kilograms is only a logical consequence.

V8 with 482 hp – for 86.900 euros

A classic 6.2-liter smallblock night-cylinder vacuum cleaner (internal name LT2) with 354 kW / 482 hp works directly behind the driver. That is 9.5 kW / 13 hp less than in the US version due to the particle filter and thus the Corvette moves in the range of services of the Porsche 911 GTS. However, the AMI, which will be with the dealer from October, is with a basic price of 86.900 euros significantly cheaper.

To do this, you also have to accept hard plastic steering wheel lever. For this, the large aluminum switches and the Z51 performance package, which are subject to surcharge in the USA, are included. The eighth behind the driver’s back results in a weight distribution of 60.75 to 39.25.

"Now everything is about you"

The pilot seat hikes 40 centimeters forward and the focus backwards. It is located directly on the back of the driver and no longer in front of his knees, as with the predecessor. "Now everything is about you," says Chevrolet man Patrick Herrmann, who often rushes the racer over the Nordschleife. When asked how the lap time has changed, a short but clear answer follows: "Dramatic".

We swing behind the tax flattened at the top and below and wonder about the somewhat increased seating position. But that soon disappears, because the mid-engine vette makes a lot of fun. Despite the pouring rain on smooth country roads. Finally, there is the driving modes "Weather" and "Tour" up to tight "Sport" and "Track". There are also two individually configurable driving programs. In these conditions we use the "Z-Mode", in which the settings go even deeper than with "My-Mode" and choose the performance traction management (PTM) setting wet. Then the sensors work together as with the Formula 1 racers of the 1990s and, due to the improved computing power, fit the traction of the rear tires. This also means that the rebellious rear remains in the bridle when changing the direction rapidly.

Eight cylinder breathes freely

The Corvette lies well in the hand and the new weight distribution makes it easy for the driver. A pleasure is the freely breathing, full voluminous eight-cylinder, which has a variable valve control, but has no turbo-bimmer. Splendid. The fast-right steering wheel lies well in the hand, but the feedback does not quite reach the level of Porsche control. Nevertheless, the Corvette can be circled exactly and quite exhausted around the corner. A result of the high mechanical grip and the electrohydraulic limitation differential integrated in the gearbox. The eight-speed dual clutch circuit developed in cooperation with Tremac does its job imperceptibly. The same can also be said about the cylinder shutdown, which you only notice because the display in the digital cockpit changes.

The Americans have succeeded in real progress at the chassis. Especially in the tour driving program you are comfortable with the star-and-stripes thumb and the Magnetic ride dampers were also confidently gone away. Even in track mode, you don’t have to fear for your intervertebral discs. If everything runs smoothly, the Corvette reaches land street pace after 3.5 seconds and misses the 300 km/h by 4 km/h. Chevrolet specifies 12.1 l/100 km as an average consumption. We came to 14.3 l/100 km during our test drives.

In the interior, the Americans play the jet fighter card and do without excessive infotainment overstimulation. The focus is on an eight -inch touchscreen, through which the smartphone can be integrated via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. The virtual cockpit is somewhat playful, but the most important information provides the head-up display anyway. Since the Corvette is rather confusing backwards, the rearview mirror reproduces the image of a camera, which works well after a short getting used to. In addition, Chevrolet is equipping the eighth generation of the Corvette with assistants such as a dead angle warning and a helper that raises alarm as soon as cross traffic endangers the parking.

  1. Regardless of the
(no longer recognizable) Corvette, which is a shame, Tesla has always been very much … emotionless and boring. Or is that just my view now? Don’t get me wrong, I would also buy a corvette as little as a Tesla. Much too impractical and too expensive to get from A to B. But so far it has already looked quite nice regardless of the utility value.

  2. That
Is not a corvette ! That could be everything from Lamborghini to McLaren! So typical European unit porridge! So ! Never !

  3. Unfortunately
The Corvette no longer looks like the Corvette, but like an x any super sports car. The performance may be massively improved, but it has lost its cult character. And 14 liters to 100? If there is a full utilization, over 20 liters are probably more. And most owners are probably driven by most owners, because the Vette is built for that. With the German fuel prices, the new Corvette probably fell from time. But she’s not a Daily Driver either. By the way: the price/performance ratio is unbeatable!

Great that there are also reports about cars that you no longer want to see in D anymore. At least as far as the mainstream is concerned ! The green environmental rescuers have to get a heart collapse if this corvette drives past ! Finally a car and no vacuum cleaner…..

  5. Tesla toaster?
I have both in the garage, a Corvette C5, and a Tesla Model 3 Performance. And of course the C8 already test drive. To pose, the Corvette is better. In curves (and only exactly there) they are superior to the Tesla. In everything else she has zero chance. With the Tesla I can accelerate in the city at night without someone feeling disturbed. And the pull through 50, 100 or 150km/h is like another star, there is no corvette with it. Even if I like the Brobles and Worse of the V8 – it’s just yesterday. An electric drive with 500PS and 660NM just makes everything better. Except.

  6. I take her.
Before you drive your loud corvette to the scrap site, I will be happy to take the car off you. They are then no longer tempted to disturb people in their sleep at night.
