The lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 58 kWh stores enough energy for around 420 kilometers according to the WLTP measurement. With a charging capacity of 100 kW, it can be charged from 5 to 80 percent of its capacity or 80 percent in just 35 minutes. charge for a range of a good 300 kilometers. Thanks to its powerful engine, which delivers 310 Nm to the driven rear axle as soon as it starts to roll, the Cupra Born with the 150 kW engine accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 7.3 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 160 km/h. At 15.4 kWh per 100 km (according to WLTP), its consumption is quite low. Cupra gives an eight-year guarantee on the drive battery up to 160.000 kilometers (guaranteed minimum capacity of 70 percent).
With the Born, a new technological era begins for Cupra. The model, which was inspired by the design of Barcelona’s El Born district and named after him, has the potential to shake up the market for electric cars: “The Born‘s highly developed electric drive technology ensures an exhilarating driving experience. It is proof that electrification and performance can complement each other perfectly. That makes it a game changer on the market: it helps to reduce CO2 emissions, but thanks to its dynamics it doesn’t make any compromises,” says Dr. Werner Tietz, Head of Research and Development for Cupra and Seat. Cupra plans to become an all-electric brand by 2030.

In order to be able to cover the different customer needs as broadly as possible, three further versions of the Born with different performance levels and battery capacities will follow in the course of the coming months. The two variants with an output of up to 170 kW (231 hp) guarantee maximum sportiness; They can probably be ordered from the end of this year, with the first deliveries planned for February 2022. They differ in their battery capacity of 58 kWh or 77 kWh. The latter enables a range of up to around 540 kilometers according to WLTP. The drive pallet is rounded down to the starting model with 110 kW (150 hp) and a battery capacity of 45 kWh available from the second quarter 2022 from the second quarter 2022.
With fully fittings in the electric future
All four versions ex works have a quite extensive standard equipment. These include a 5.3-inch full-digital instrument cluster, sports peel seats on the front, the Cupra Fashion Selector for selecting the various driving profiles, 18-inch alloy wheels, the keyless start system Keyless Go, a lane support assistant, an ultrasonic parking aid front and rear, the Environmental observation system ” Front Assist “with City emergency brake function and full LED headlights and tail lights.

The two variants with 170 kW (231 hp) also have additional equipment parts that are intended to underline once again that Cupra has its roots in motorsport. These include a heated multifunction sports steering wheel in leather with Cupra Mode Selector and Cupra e-Boost Activator, 19-inch light-alloy wheels and disc brakes at the front with a diameter of 340 millimeters.
The e-Boost will also be reserved for these two most powerful variants: At the push of a button or optionally with a kick-down, the engine electronics call up an additional 20 kW (27 hp) of power compared to the 150 kW variant, in order to then run the vehicle with the full power of 170 kW (231 hp) to accelerate. From a standstill to 100 km/h it only takes 6.6 seconds.
A Spaniard from German production
The Spanish brand’s e-car is produced at the German plant of the parent company Volkswagen in Zwickau, the first VW car factory to produce exclusively electric vehicles and is considered to be the largest and most efficient factory for e-vehicles in Europe to date. With a daily production of up to 1400 units, the plant has an annual capacity of over 330.000 vehicles. In addition to the Cupra Born, four other models are manufactured in Zwickau: the Volkswagen ID.3, the Volkswagen ID.4, the Audi Q4 e-tron and the Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron.

The model is an important part of Cupra‘s expansion into international markets. With the Born, the company wants to increase the brand’s share of the company’s total sales to 20 percent and open up new international sales markets – especially in the most electrified countries. With the start of sales, Cupra is also introducing a new sales strategy with the agency model. In addition, customers will have the opportunity to drive the Born as part of a subscription model.
