Auto-Deutschland 2009: Packed by the scrapping fever, the nation has stocked up on small cars. A trend with consequences. Buyers’ interest in BMW 3 Series or Mercedes C-Class, which has been declining since the beginning of the year, has led to a drop in their residual values โ€‹โ€‹- and makes their operation more and more expensive.

The formerly popular middle class, however, is coming under increasing pressure with a minus of eight percent – as a result, even the residual values โ€‹โ€‹of used cars are slipping into the basement.

Because with less and less success in the middle class models like the Audi A4, the BMW 3-series and the Mercedes C-Class vie for the favor of the buyers. "The downward trend continues, both in terms of demand and residual values," says Michael Bergmann, Managing Director of the market research company Eurotax Schwacke Environmental bonus is due. "

According to Eurotax Schwacke, a three-year-old mid-range car is now only worth around 15,400 euros on average – that is a price drop of around twelve percent compared to the previous year. And with these items there are clear differences: The operating costs for the mid-range range gape per 100 kilometers between 50.35 euros for the Audi A4 1.8 TFSI and 62.17 euros for the particularly economical Mercedes C 220 T CDI BlueEfficiency. The new price, which is 8,000 euros higher than that of the Audi, throws up the balance sheet for the Mercedes. With a holding period of four years and a mileage of 60,000 kilometers, the higher costs compared to the competitor A4 add up to almost 7100 euros.

Just as expensive as the Mercedes is the Ford Mondeo 2.3 Trend, which, despite a comparatively low purchase price of 28 150 euros, comes to a sum of 60.30 euros per 100 kilometers. And also the new Opel Insignia 2.0 CDTI Edition models as a station wagon (59.83 euros per 100 kilometers) and sedan (58.45) come off rather badly in terms of costs.

On the other hand, the market observers only attest operating costs of around 50 euros per 100 kilometers to the 160 hp A4 1.8 TFSI; all other models are higher. With around one euro more operating costs per kilometer, the Toyota Avensis 1.8 (51.43 euros) and the BMW 318i (51.61 euros) come closest to the Audi A4.
