Toyota stands for hybrid and reliability. Both of these are really not bad prerequisites for sales success. But it is precisely in the environmentally conscious car market of Germany that the world’s largest vehicle manufacturer is weakening. The drop in sales here is over 15 percent.
In 2014, Toyota was only able to sell 70,408 vehicles in Germany. This is by no means causing concern at the Toyota City headquarters in Japan. Because in relation to global sales, Germany as a market only accounts for 0.7 percent. The industry giant would hardly feel it if a Toyota were no longer sold in Germany.
Quite a few blame the design for the ailing performance. Mazda and the Koreans Kia and Hyundai are currently showing how to press more dynamism into the sheet metal. Tom Fux, Managing Director of Toyota Germany, does not contradict: "We have to charge our brand with more emotions."

In addition to a more appealing look, this should also be achieved through more motorsport activities. “After all,” says Fux, “30 percent of all Dakar rally vehicles have our emblem.” The return to the World Rally Championship (WRC) should take place in 2017.
Toyota is taking a big step forward with the Mirai. The sedan, which has been on sale in Japan since December 2014, is as visually independent as it is technically. Under the sheet metal cladding is a highly efficient fuel cell drive that is said to be 95 percent cheaper than in the test vehicle Highlander Fuel Cell.
Now is the time for Toyota to target certain markets with the Mirai as the first mass-produced fuel cell vehicle. The rollout began in the United States two months ago. In autumn it’s Denmark, Germany and Great Britain.
No compact SUV on offer
“The infrastructure and customer acceptance are right here,” says Fux, explaining the European selection. The managing director of Toyota Germany sees the Mirai as one of the most important pioneers in the automotive industry and wants to offer the fuel cell model to us for 78,540 euros. A brave step, there is also a Mercedes S-Class for the money. The Mirai is built in Motomachi near Yokohama, Toyota’s first ever factory. The sales target for 2016 is 1500 units.
The new RAV4 will arrive this year. A hybrid version is planned for 2016. With the SUV, Toyota was once considered a trendsetter. It is incomprehensible why the brand currently has nothing to offer in this segment. Dealers are registering increasing demand and have to let customers move to Opel (Mokka), Renault (Captur), Peugeot (2008), Nissan (Juke) and now also Mazda (CX-3). It can be heard that Toyota does not want to counter with a city crossover until 2017.
The Japanese manufacturer clearly holds pole position when it comes to hybrids. Over seven million vehicles have so far been sold with this technology. "28 percent of all Toyotas sold in Europe have hybrid drives," says Karl Schlicht, Vice President Toyota Motors Europe (TME), and has announced that the next Prius (fourth generation) will not only have an even more economical drive, but also more agile driving dynamics.

In contrast, the Land Cruiser V8 receives a minus sign. The rough terrain with eight-cylinder does not meet Euro 6 and is no longer offered in Germany. The successor to the Proace is on the agenda for 2016.
The model for trade, craft and trade is manufactured together with the PSA group in France. Toyota cooperates with BMW on another level. Both develop a sports car and share the costs. While the Japanese come up with a coupe, the Germans use the platform for their next Z4 Roadster. Bayern are also receiving support from Japan when it comes to hydrogen. Toyota is supplying the fuel cell stacks. In return, BMW supplies diesel engines.
Finally, a new modular vehicle architecture called TNGA is supposed to save money on a large scale at Toyota. According to Mitsuhisa Kato, the use of more structurally identical components (model VW) can reduce development costs by at least 20 percent. “In the next five years, half of our cars will be based on this architecture,” promises Toyota’s development board member.
