E-bike battery: What you should consider in the case of cold-e-bikes

Enthusiastic e-bike drivers do not shy away from the cold, but the sensitive battery is already. Therefore, you should initiate some precautionary measures. Otherwise, they quickly run the risk that the expensive e-bike battery will not survive the cold season unscathed. In the video you can see how to prepare your e-bike for the winter.

E-bike battery-you should consider that in the case of cold

Real cyclists do not know the season and the e-bike of the cold must also defy. In fact, the electronics of most electric bicycles are so stable that cycling is quite possible in winter. However, the weakest link is the battery, which is one of the most important components of the e-bike and is not really cold-resistant.

  • In general, a temperature between around 10 and 20 degrees is optimal for the battery. Extreme temperatures, whether heat or cold, are rather suboptimal for the e-bike battery. Ultimately, this means for them that not only the performance of the battery is significantly reduced in the case of cold or heat, the life expectancy of the battery can also be significantly shortened.

  • If the worst case occurs, however, you do not necessarily have to dispose of the battery. Often the e-bike battery can be refreshed and is therefore at least suitable as a reserve battery. This may allow you to replace the empty battery for a reserve battery, among other things, on long routes.

  • The expansion of the e-bike shop network is progressing steadily, but with longer outdoor trips, a reserve battery can be very useful. And even in the event of cold, a reserve battery cannot hurt due to the increased energy consumption in case of doubt.

Protect e-bike battery in cold-so you get through the winter well

If you have equipped your electric bike with robust winter tires and have the battery a particularly caring treatment, glide with the e-bike safely through the cold season.

  • If you drive with the electric bike in the cold, take the battery into the apartment overnight. Park the e-bike outside or a cold room during the day, take the battery into the office.

  • Since batteries are quite sensitive to the cold, you can now get good protective covers from specialist retailers. Especially if you are traveling with the e-bike every day or often in the case of cold, the investment in high-quality battery neoprene protection is worthwhile.

  • Due to the protective cover, your battery is not only better protected from moisture and dirt, the consumption of the charging capacity is also reduced by up to 20 percent.

  • You can’t do much more for the battery. Due to the somewhat more extreme driving and road conditions in cold, however, particularly careful maintenance of the bicycle frame and especially the bicycle chain is certainly not a bad idea.

  • Do not use your e-bike in winter, store the battery somewhere in your apartment. As is known, the optimal battery capacity in one area between around 30 and 80 percent and this also applies if you do not use the battery. Since the battery discharges over time, you should remember to recharge it every now and then during the winter months.
