If a car wants to be ecological, it is preferred to drive as a hybrid or on natural gas. This is shown again by the environmental ranking of the Verkehrsclub Deutschland (VCD). E-cars play a special role

F.Change of leadership in eco-cars: After last year the natural gas triplets VW Eco Up, Seat Mii Ecofuel and Skoda Citigo CNG Green Tec occupied the top of the environmental rankings of the Verkehrsclub Deutschland (VCD), a hybrid model has moved up again after 2011 above: the Lexus CT 200h. The part-time electricity of the Toyota subsidiary ousted the structurally identical CNG minis to second place.

The environmental list has been evaluating more than 400 current car models every year since 1989, i.e. for the 25th time in 2014, based on the climate impact from CO2, as well as the impact on people and the environment from noise and pollutants.

The top ten includes hybrids and natural gas cars, but this year also economical diesels and gasoline engines, which in the case of conventional combustion engines can be seen as a success for the car manufacturers’ development departments. In addition, the Japanese manufacturers no longer dominate the top ten places as much as they did last year.

The compact Peugeot 308 1.6 BlueHDi 120, a diesel vehicle, also made it onto the podium. Fourth place goes to the Audi A3 Sportback in the natural gas version g-tron. The Toyota Prius is in fifth place, while the hybrid was in third place last year.

The battery spoils the balance sheet for electric cars

Sixth place is shared by the diesels from the Citroën C4 Cactus (BlueHDI 100) and VW Polo (1.4 TDI Bluemotion). Eighth place is shared by the little brother of the Prius, the Toyota Yaris Hybrid, and the SUV Peugeot 2008 with three-cylinder gasoline engine (1.2 Puretech 82 ETG5 Stop&Begin).

The top ten is rounded off by the Citroën C1 small car with a three-cylinder gasoline engine (VTi 68 Stop & Start) together with the identically constructed Peugeot 108 and Toyota Aygo, but according to VCD, another four vehicles performed with the same good number of points.

The eco-ranking of the traffic club should serve as a decision-making aid for car buyers, therefore there is also an evaluation according to class. In the compact class category, the overall winner Lexus CT 200h was ahead, among the family cars the club was the first to recommend the diesel Peugeot 308, and the seven-seater Toyota Prius + was ahead. The detailed environmental list with 400 models can be downloaded for a small fee from the VCD website.

Decision support for customers

In the category “The climactic best”, in which especially the emission of the greenhouse gas CO2 is evaluated, the Toyota Yaris Hybrid can convince with only 75 grams of carbon dioxide emissions over 100 kilometers. Nine other vehicles remain below 82 grams of CO2 / km. From the point of view of the VCD, this shows that the fleet limit of 95 grams per kilometer set for new vehicles for 2020 can be easily achieved.

The VCD has also created an electric car list, but separate from the overall ranking. Refueled with electricity generated from renewable sources, the battery-powered cars would be clearly in the lead among the “climate best”. Not necessarily with the current electricity mix in Germany, stressed Anja Smetanin. The VCD spokeswoman sees a second problem that leads to the separate assessment of the electric vehicles: "To offset the CO2 emitted during battery production, an electric car would first have to drive 20,000 to 30,000 kilometers on green electricity."
