- Train and bus are contribution to environmental protection
- Environmentally friendly package: waste disposal, power generation, public transport
Frankfurt city bus traffic is becoming more and more environmentally friendly. Several lines have already been completely converted with battery electric buses to locally emission-free operation. The Federal Ministry of Environment promotes the electrification with several million euros.
A big step was the conversion of the Metrobus line M60 to battery electric buses. Since timetable change on 13. December 2020 the E-Buses are reliable, exhaust-free and quiet between Eschersheim and ROdelheim, as the Frankfurt disposal and service GmbH (FES) announced. You will be charged in the Mullheizkraftwerk (MHKW) Frankfurt am Main, which produces the required electricity in the burning of household waste itself.
“Frankfurt shows exemplary, as can be tangible reality in cities from climate goals,” explains Florian Pronold, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU). “The city has long been committed to climate protection, since in 2018, she has consistently electrified its bus traffic. Because electric buses are cleaner and much quieter than conventional buses. This makes them good for the environment and quality of life in the cities.”
In addition to the acquisition of 34 of the new buses, the BMU partially promotes the necessary charging infrastructure. In the case of vehicles, the additional costs resulting from a diesel bus are financed with up to 80 percent. The loading infrastructure for the M60 line of Transdev is promoted up to 40 percent. Overall, for the conversion of the bus lines 37, M60 and 52, around 7.81 million euros of funding are flowed to Frankfurt. The conversion of line 33 and the charging infrastructure of the ICB Frankfurt is funded from funds of the state of Hesse.
Train and bus are contribution to environmental protection
“The cooperation between the FES and the bus company Transdev Rhein-Main GmbH is a widely visible signal for the climate-friendly road transition transaction. For the first time in Germany, waste incineration, power generation and battery-based, emission-free mobility are disposed. Frank-Furt also puts new standards thanks to Fes here, “says Frankfurt Environmental District and Fes Supervisory Board Chairman Rosemarie Holy. “In the future, from the MHKW Frankfurt from both buses and refuse vehicles are emission-free, electrified by the combustion of the household waste of our citizens. I would not know what to do with garbage better.”
Operator The bus line M60 is the company Transdev Rhein-Main GmbH. Managing Director Heiko Schutte is satisfied with electric breads: “The experience of the international transdev group has proven that electromobility can be implemented on a large scale and economic prizes: In Europe alone, the TRANSDEM Group already uses more than 1000 electro buses and thus operates The largest European e-bus fleet “. This now also benefits Frankfurt am Main, which now has the M60 over the first fully zero-emission-driven bus line, which provides a mileage of approximately one million kilometers per year.
Bus lines 33 and 37 operates the urban company in-der-City Bus GmbH (ICB). It can rely on the experience with the electrification of line 75 in December 2018. Since then, about 200 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) and 640 kg of nitric oxide (NOx) are released on this inner-city line every year. “Convince use stability and running power-dependent operating costs of the battery foot. Overall, the advantages outweigh the detriment of the higher investment costs by far, “sums up ICB Managing Director Christian Schaefer’s experiences with the electric breads in driving.
Now experiences with electrical joint buses are collected for the first time. “In recent years, ICB has built the internal expertise to tackle the technology change of diesel on locally emission-free, low-noise and electricity and from 2022 also with hydrogen-operated E-Buses. The electric motor is the drive of the future, “says Christian Schaefer.

The electricity required for the operation of the buses at the Metrobus M60 M60 provides FES Frankfurter Disposable and Service GmbH on its permanent establishment in Hedernheim. Five charging pillars with two loading ports each have been installed to load the 13 e-buses. Since the buses are used distributed over the day, there are always enough stations available. A charging on the up to 150 kW high charging points takes a maximum of three and a half hours.
During the year 2021, the charging infrastructure should be supplemented by four additional charging columns. Fes Managing Director Dirk Remmert: “waste incineration plants are often not considered in public than what they are: powerful energy and heat generators who are not only able to keep our homes in winter, but with them suddenly the solution of future questions in our cities suddenly in tangible Proximity.”
In the facility can be up to 525 per year.000 tons of waste recycled. From a ton of waste in turn, 400 kWh electricity can be generated. More than enough to provide electric cusses with sufficient energy.
