- Convincing: the charging curve
- Well thought out: the thermal management
- Holistic: the charging offer
Audi makes electromobility long-distance with the e-tron, also thanks to one in the competitive environment – once quite apart of Tesla as benchmark – uniquely high charging power. The E-TRON is the first series car from German production, which can recharge your batteries with a quick loading column with up to 150 kW. The high charging power over a wide range of charging shortens service life at the charging columns. The ingenuated thermal management of the battery ensures performance in cold as in hot outdoor temperatures.
Also, some Tesla models create 150 kW when loading on the supercharger, such as the widest models 3 versions as well as Model S and Model X with a large 100 kWh battery. In the future, the higher charging power for further vehicle versions should be unlocked. For the new SuperCharger fast loader of the third generation, of which some are already installed in the US, Tesla sees 250 kW. The maximum charging power is currently supported exclusively from Model 3.
Most loads take place at home or at work – the factor time plays there usually no major role because the car is long. On the other hand, every minute is one minute and fast charging is essential, for example at a business trip. After a short break, the car should be ready for the next stage. This important basic requirement for an electric car have implemented the Audi engineers in the development of the Audi E-Tron.
Convincing: the charging curve
The current competitive environment includes the charging power of the Audi E-Tron next to Tesla with the fastest, which is currently available. The Ingolstadt Firstling has the ability of the HPC fast shop (high-power-charging) with up to 150 kW. At least as important as the maximum power is a high current consumption of the battery over a wide range of charging.
The 150 kW charging curve of the Audi E-Tron is characterized by continuity at a high level: the car invites for ideal conditions in the range of 5 to 70 percent state of charge at the threshold of the maximum power before the intelligent battery management reduces the currents to the lithium Ion-ion cells to protect and ensure their lifetime. This is a big difference to other concepts that usually achieve your full performance only for a short time (peak) and rule down significantly before the 70 percent threshold. Because the Audi E-Tron still invites 80 percent with more than 100 kW.
In everyday life, this means a high utility value: For about 100 kilometers range, the customer is ideally located less than 10 minutes on the charging pillar. The 80 percent mark reaches the Audi E-Tron after just under 30 minutes. Although for technical reasons, it takes much more time to fill the remaining 20 percent of a lithium-ion battery, fully loading the Audi E-TRON on a HPC column takes less than 50 minutes.
Well thought out: the thermal management
The lithium-ion battery of the Audi E-Tron has a nominal capacity of 95 kWh and is designed for a long life. Your thermal management lays the basis for a balanced performance, so the manufacturer. A fluid cooling ensures that the battery temperature also moves even with high load or low temperatures in the optimum range of 25 to 35 degrees Celsius. This technical design ensures high load and driving performance and at the same time prevents excessive stress of the cells.
The heart of the cooling system are extruded profiles – visually comparable to a slatted frame – which are glued from below to the battery system. A newly developed, thermally conductive adhesive connects the cooling unit with the battery case. The contact between the housing and the cell modules placed therein in turn produces the so-called GAP filters – a thermally conductive gel that fills the gap to the housing under each cell module. It directs the resulting waste heat of the cells evenly via the battery case into the coolant – a particularly effective solution. The spatial separation of cooling water-carrying elements and battery cells also increases the safety of the overall system.
Holistic: the charging offer
In addition to charging power and battery capacity, the availability of charging columns is a key factor for limitless and carefree electromobility. Also in the infrastructure Audi has left nothing to chance. With its own charging service E-Tron Charging Service, the brand with the four rings is currently around 100.000 charging points in 17 EU countries are accessible by card or smartphone. Land-specific standardized tariffs allow easy and carefree travel without annoying price comparisons.
On longer trips Audi customers invite special conditions to the HPC pillars of the ionity network, which is gradually expanded and 400 stations are already included in 2020. Further HPC charging points of well-known providers complete the offer of E-Tron Charging Service along the long distance and create additional flexibility.
