The Volvo XC40 gets a fully electric offshoot: the Swedish-Chinese car manufacturer presents on 16. October 2019 its first pure electric car based on the compact premium SUV. Thus, the company continues its electrification strategy and remains faithful: As a true Volvo, the stromer is one of the safest cars on the road – despite the challenges associated with elimination of the internal combustion engine.
The advance of electric cars is one of the biggest changes in the history of the automobile. For the first time for over a century, vehicles move without gasoline or diesel engine and use a high-voltage battery in the vehicle floor. This makes the vehicle changed in the core.
“Whether with electric machine or internal combustion engine, a Volvo must be sure. The fully electric Volvo XC40 will be one of the safest vehicles we have ever built.”- Malin Ekholm, Head of Safety at Volvo Cars
Building on the excellent safety standards of the conventionally powered Volvo XC40, Volvo engineers had to completely redesign and amplify the front structure to compensate for the elimination of the internal combustion engine, to meet the high demands and to carry the occupants as safe as in any other Volvo.

In order to ensure the safety of passengers and the integrity of the battery in the event of a collision, Volvo Cars has developed a new and unique security structure for the fully electric Volvo XC40. The battery is protected by a safety cage consisting of a frame of extruded aluminum and is embedded in the middle of the body structure. This creates a crumple zone around the battery. The placement of the battery in the vehicle floor also has the advantage that the vehicle focus decreases, which in turn reduces the risk of rollover.
At the same time, Volvo has also strengthened the body structure of the vehicle. The electric powertrain was integrated into the body structure to lead the forces acting in an accident even better from the cabin and thus reduce the burden on people in the vehicle.

Also in the field of active safety systems, the battery electrical Volvo XC40 introduces a new technique. The first Volvo model has the compact Premium SUV via the new Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAs) sensor platform, which uses a software developed by Zenuity – a joint venture of Volvo Cars and Veoneer -. The new ADAS platform combines several cameras, radar and ultrasonic sensors. Due to their scalability, it can be further developed easily and thus forms the basis for future autonomous driving technology.
