Electric Cupra “Born” later this year

Electric Cupra

Just in time for the third anniversary of the brand, Cupra presented the production version of the electric car “Born” for the first time. The Spanish counterpart to the VW ID.3 was originally presented in 2019 as Seat El-Born, but later landed optically modified at the performance brand CUPRA. The car is scheduled to go into production in Zwickau in the second half of 2021. With the MEB model, Seat and Cupra are also adopting Volkswagen’s agency model in terms of sales. In addition, Born is to be offered as a subscription.

Because it was officially a strategy presentation and not a product presentation, Cupra was rather reluctant to give technical data. However, there is some evidence that the Born, as a derivative of the ID.3 Pro S is to be positioned – with a 150 kW motor, a battery with 77 kWh, a charging capacity of up to 125 kW and a range of 513 kilometers (WLTP).

So far, the Cupra brand has primarily offered high-performance combustion engine versions from Seat. The first independent model “Formentor” is also available as a plug-in with a battery range of 58 kilometers (WLTP). The Born should now be the first fully electric model and according to Cupra-Boss Wayne Griffiths the transformation of the brand. “With this car, we want to contribute to the electrification of Spain and the world through its emotional sportiness.”

As is known, the brand also works on a series version of the purely Electric Concept Cars Cupra Tavascan. The very dynamically drawn study is more generous than the Born and should therefore be at the VW ID in size and drive.4 orient.

Even with SEAT itself, there should be pure electric cars in the future. According to the news agency Reuters, Seat summarizes the production of a purely electric small car in his work Martorell at Barcelona and urges the Spanish government to a battery production near the factory. For some time, rumors have been compressed that a Nissan Auto Mund in Barcelona stands before the closure could be used for battery production – also by SEAT -.

About such plans for the SEAT parent is not speculated for the first time. At the end of last year, the “Handelsblatt” reported that the planned small electric car from VW is to be built in cooperation with JAC in China. In addition to the presumably VW ID.2, JAC could also build a sister model for Cupra, it was said at the time.
