The car became known as the rolling boxfish. Mercedes showed the study four years ago "Bionic Car", which was trimmed primarily for aerodynamics. Now it is the "Blue Zero" and this model will soon become the new B-Class with an electric motor. WELT ONLINE has already driven the car.
A.hen the Mercedes researchers presented the “Blue Zero” a few years ago, there was not only a lot of applause but also plenty of laughter. The small car, which was designed for minimal flow resistance, looked too weird and abstruse. But the concept has matured in the meantime, has switched from the research department to the development department and could thus become the model for the next B-Class.
Because something as visionary "Bionic Car ”has now become a firmly established study that was published in January as a "Blue Zero ”was one of the stars of the Detroit Motor Show. And because Mercedes apparently has more to do with it than just a little show and appearance, the green electric speedster was now ready for its first ride.
"Developing this car was a tightrope walk for us, ”says project manager Uwe Skrzypek. Together with a team of 50 experts, he had nine months to implement the designers’ ideas. On the one hand, the study was supposed to attract attention and therefore had to look futuristic and spectacular. On the other hand, Mercedes wanted a serious vehicle that could be relieved of its closeness to the series.
From the outside, the B-Zero looks so unconventional that everyone actually turns around after the metallic shimmering cube with the streamlined nose and the distinctive folds in the flanks. But as soon as the doors open and you take a seat under the transparent solar roof on one of the five seats, it is as comfortable as you would expect in a Mercedes. Of course, the cockpit is a bit more colorful than usual, the seats have a metallic glitter, and the fact that you can see the skeleton of the thin support structure through the transparent plastic consoles gives a feeling of lightness. "The use of well-known components gives us the necessary credibility and underlines the closeness to the series, ”says Skrzypek.
Even the drive has almost the status of the series – at least the small series. Because at the front under the hood is the same electric motor that gets the fuel cell variant of the B-Class going. 136 hp and with full power from the first second, as is characteristic of electric motors, it guarantees a cavalier start. And even if the Stromer runs out of air a little shortly after the first sprint, it is still enough for 150 kilometers per hour.
In this Blue Zero, Mercedes relies exclusively on electric mobility and has therefore built in lithium-ion batteries for 200 kilometers and written "E-Cell" on the engine cover. With the same design, but in different colors, there is also the idea of a version with a fuel cell and a hydrogen tank, which is called the "B-Cell “has a range of 400 kilometers. There is also a "E-Cell Plus “version, in which the three-cylinder diesel from the Smart is installed in the spare wheel well as an emergency power unit. As soon as the batteries are empty, it starts the generator and produces electricity for a total of 600 kilometers.
Project manager Skrzypek does not want to reveal when the Blue Zero or individual elements of it will go into series production. But the timetable has long been written. As early as next year, Mercedes wants to show the A- or B-Class with an electric drive. "There is nothing about this study that cannot be done in series, ”says Skrzypek.
