Tesla is the market leader with the Model 3
Do you remember? Germany should one day become the global "lead market for electromobility". This has not yet been remotely achieved; the world’s largest market is still China. Even in the Corona year 2020, the number of new electric vehicles (electric cars plus plug-in hybrids) increased by 14.6 percent. This is shared by the Center of Automotive Research (CAM) now in its latest edition of the Electromobility Report.
The market share of electric vehicles increased from 5.0 to 6.2 percent (see graphic above), while the overall passenger car market shrank by 6 percent to 20.18 million vehicles. As in Germany, the overall market declined, while E. – vehicles more popular became. The electric quota is practically the same as in Germany: In China, electric cars (BEVs) plus plug-in vehicles (PHEVs) achieve 6.2 percent, as I said, in Germany it was 6.0 percent.

In contrast to Germany (where PHEVs account for around half of sales), BEVs are far more popular in China. New BEV registrations rose to one million cars for the first time in 2020 (+16 percent). PHEVs, on the other hand, only make up a quarter of this number, namely 247,000 (+9 percent). The BEV market share in China was 5.0 percent, the PHEV share only 1.2 percent.
According to reports from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), the market leader for electric vehicles in China in 2020 is the Tesla Model 3 with over 137,000 vehicles. Together with the other Tesla models, China should already be good for around 30 percent of global Tesla sales. The American manufacturer sold almost half a million last year Cars worldwide. The Model 3 has also been built in Shanghai since the end of 2019. The Model Y has recently been built there, delivery of which started on January 18, 2021.

Electric cars: market leaders and sales shares in Germany 2020
Study director Stefan Bratzel said: “China is becoming more and more the linchpin of the transforming automotive industry. China is not only the largest global car market, which in a comparison of the market regions got through the Corona crisis best. The country is also the most important market for electric vehicles, which represents an entry into the premier league of global automobile manufacturers for new players. In addition to Tesla, local players such as Nio, BYD or Xpeng are showing enormous dynamism in the new future topics. "
