In recent years, environmental friendliness has become a decisive purchase criterion. The seal "Eco trend" of the independent institute for environmental research. The current test winners have now been determined. Conclusion: Many clean men come from Munich.

A.When it became known in September of this year that the former German Foreign Minister and Green Party politician Joschka Fischer was working as a consultant for BMW, some eco-purists may have shaken their heads. But Oko-Trend, an institute for environmental research, is likely to have confirmed Fischer’s decision in retrospect: In the recently published study by the institute, BMW is clearly in first place in the company rating of car manufacturers.

If you count the in-house brand Mini In addition, the Bavarian Motor Works put eight of the first 16 vehicles in the new Auto-Umwelt-Ranking. Quite astonishing: This is achieved solely through the large number of economical diesel models. Even the lavishly motorized BMW 120d made it to 13th place in the statistics despite its 177 hp.

This phalanx from southern Germany is only broken by three Japanese hybrid vehicles (Toyota Prius, Honda Insight and Civic Hybrid) and two models powered by natural gas (Mercedes B180 NGT, VW Passat 1.4 TSI EcoFuel). The only brand that can compete with BMW in first places in the Okotest thanks to its diesel drive are the BlueMotion models from VW (2nd place Polo, 8th Golf, 17th Passat).

However, the vehicle with the best environmental record remains the Toyota Prius, which relegates the Polo to second place despite its higher CO2 emissions (89 grams per kilometer compared to 87). The reason for this are various parameters that have also been included in the life cycle assessment.

This also includes 17 percent production and nine percent the possibilities of recycling. Consumption and CO2 emissions are only included at ten percent. According to its own information, the institute is completely independent of the automotive industry and is financed exclusively through the distribution of its studies.
