Kia’s plan is eleven eco-cars by 2020. The Niro hybrid SUV made its debut in 2016, the Optima got a plug-in drive, and a fuel cell could soon be working in the Sportage.

Kia may currently offer the lifestyle-trimmed compact model Soul as an electric version and its top limousine Optima as a hybrid and also sell other low-consumption vehicles, but this does not mean that Korea’s second largest car brand has a green image.

The Hyundai subsidiary only ranks 35th among the “Best Global Green Brands 2014”. Others are already further. Toyota ranks second with Ford, just ahead of Honda. Kia will also see itself there in the future. And in 2020 they want to be at the forefront when it comes to the production of environmentally friendly cars.

"We need the diesel"

There will be eleven eco models with a variety of drives ranging from hybrids to fuel cells. The Hyundai Motor Group intends to invest a total of around ten billion euros in this.

"The market for electric cars and plug-in hybrids will continue to grow," emphasizes Ki-Sang Lee, head of research and development for environmentally friendly vehicles at Kia Motors. Lee expects sales of these vehicles worldwide to increase from 1.9 million today to 6.4 million annually by 2020.

A first cornerstone of this strategy could be the Niro, a 4.36 meter long hybrid crossover that will be launched in Korea and the USA in the first half of 2016 and in Europe in the second half of 2016. The Niro should be something like the "Prius among SUVs" for Kia.

The vehicle concept in particular is expected to gain significant competitive advantages. “With the Niro, we have crossed the advantages of a hybrid vehicle with those of a compact SUV,” says product manager Jiah Kim. According to preliminary information, the Niro will achieve CO2 emissions of 90 g / km.

The powertrain engineers also managed – alongside those from Toyota – to build a gasoline engine with a thermal efficiency of 40 percent for the first time. Usually only very good diesels achieve this value.

In addition, like the Audi Q7 e-tron, the Niro has what is known as “Predictive Energy Control”: the car knows the route profile from the navigation data and uses certain sections such as downhill runs for battery management.

Kia has high hopes for the luxury-class sedan Optima, which has been available as a hybrid for several years. The second generation is currently rolling out, with a smaller four-cylinder engine (2.0 instead of 2.4 liters) and improved efficiency.

The hybrid version is only offered outside of Europe, however, because the normal model is already experiencing extremely high demand in Asia and America. Kia sells around 300,000 units there annually, more than Mercedes of the E-Class.

In Europe, the Koreans rely exclusively on plug-in hybrid technology in addition to the conventional combustion engine versions of the Optima. An electric range of 43 kilometers is promised.

The station wagon, which Kia had to work through for a long time to even put it on its wheels, will run with the same technology (205 PS system output) from 2017. Station wagons are practically not for sale outside of Europe. The Niro PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle), which is also on the plan for 2017, is expected to be more successful.

Kia is working on the subject of fuel cells together with Hyundai. The parent company already has the ix35 SUV on the road as an FCEV (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle) in small numbers. By the end of the year there should be 250 vehicles across Europe, 120 of them in Germany.

1000 fuel cell vehicles per year

The successor model, the Hyundai Tucson, will also have this fuel cell drive. It is quite possible that Kia is pursuing a similar strategy with its sister model Sportage. In any case, the series production of fuel cell vehicles is planned for 2020, citing a production number of 1000 units per year to start with.

Kia’s green strategy should bring a good 25 percent reduction in CO2 compared to the 2014 figures. “Of course, in conjunction with optimized combustion engines. They are still the main drive of our vehicles, ”explains Development Manager Donghee Han.

Seven out of ten units (diesel and petrol) will be replaced by new developments, including a 1.4-liter direct injection engine from the family known internally as Kappa as early as next year. sp-x
