The car market in Europe shrinks for the sixth time in a row. Not only does less demand burden the coffers in the industry, the continued lack of components such as microchips also presses the business.

Even less new cars were approved in the European Union last year than in the Corona crisis year 2020.

The number of new registrations fell by 2.4 percent to 9.7 million cars, as the European industry association ACEA announced on Tuesday in Brussels. As early as 2020, the pandemic had dried up a record slump in the car market.

Especially in the second half of 2021, the global lack of microchips heavily burdened the car manufacturers when production was temporarily stalled by numerous manufacturers. In the annual point of view, among the German manufacturers, BMW only recorded a small increase of 1.5 percent in the new registrations. Market leader Volkswagen had to accept moderate losses, Daimler slipped into the minus by 12.4 percent.

Ten percent minus in Germany

Among the four largest markets within the EU, the figures only fell in Germany, here there was a minus of around 10 percent in the new registrations. In Spain and France, they rose slightly, in Italy even by 5.5 percent. A total of 3.3 million vehicles were approved in the EU than in the pre-Corona year 2019. On the other hand, electromobility had strong growth – this should not least have been due to the massive support measures and tax privileges for electric cars.

The force of the chip lack becomes particularly clear with a view to the December data: in the entire EU only almost 800.000 cars newly approved, a minus of 22.8 percent compared to the same month last year. It was already the sixth decline in a row. The largest markets all recorded double -digit losses in percentage, in Germany the new registrations fell by more than a quarter. The VW Group in particular had to struggle among the manufacturers, the main brand of which broke up by around 40 percent in December.

USA and China have a plus

In the United States, on the other hand, Light vehicles sales (cars and light trucks) grow by three percent to 14.9 million vehicles in 2021, but were significantly below the pre-crisis level of around 17.0 million in 2019. According to the VDA, the Chinese car market ended 2021 with a market volume of 21.1 million newly approved vehicles and has grown by 7 percent. "The annual balance sheet was also better than in the pre-corona year 2019. However, the sales volume remained significantly behind the record year 2017. At the end of the year, around 2.4 million new vehicles were discontinued in China in December, 2 percent more than in the previous year", so the "Automotive week".

    In view of the self -caused chip lack, the shouting of some cars is. Manufacturer … unstoppable. If you wanted to buy a car, you want to continue. Whether with the original manufacturer, it remains to be seen.

    The chips are one thing – but – who wants to buy a car at the moment with these rapidly rapidly increasing ernergia prices ?? I prefer to save myself this high investment and go out to eat or travel well and continue my used car.

  3. Sales crisis with "Chip deficiency" covered?
    Apparently other manufacturers from overseas can deliver without any problems. Tesla has Z.B. Only a few weeks to approx. 2 months delivery time. For me it sounds like a fairy tale that wants to serve the German automotive industry (again). They are practiced in counting fairy tale – see diesel scandal, … Consumers have probably been the desire for new purchases since 2019. The reasons are in the lack of innovation in German new cars despite the highest prices, uncertainty by ever new climate taxes and finally the uncertainty because of the jobs.

  4. That’s not true
    For some models from Tesla you also wait approx. a year. In other models, Tesla uses other chips, so the customer becomes a tester, if not occurred, a security problem is. The delivery times of the German models also has the reason for demand. I ordered another ID3 today. Headup display, adaptive chassis and other equipment that Tesla cannot deliver.

  5. Homemade problems
    The only German car manufacturer has probably not terminated the delivery contracts in Corona year 2020. Since the chip manufacturers have concluded new contracts with other product manufacturers, it is becoming increasingly difficult to access standard components on a large scale. Tesla with the Model S, where older chips are still used, has a similar problem. Only in the newer models 3 and Y that use more modern processors are there no delivery bottlenecks. So the ordered vehicle is at the customer within 3 to 4 months.

  6. If you don’t want Tesla?
    The vehicles do not offer the usual standard. If a body around a tablet have remained in simple development, stopped. Tesla inspires pioneers of e-mobility, however, no transferers who are used to more comfort and good service. The required chips are therefore more manageable than from other manufacturers. So alternative chips can be used.
