The European Union plans to have at least 30 million electric cars and plug-in hybrids on the road by 2030. This emerges from a draft document cited by Reuters. In the strategy paper, which is due to be published this week, the European Commission will set out concrete measures to avoid a quarter of all EU greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector. In order to achieve this climate target, “at least” 30 million emission-free vehicles and a gradual farewell to combustion engine technology are required by 2030.
“The EU’s target of climate neutrality by 2050 cannot be achieved without introducing very ambitious measures to reduce transport’s dependence on fossil fuels,” the document says. The 30 million electric vehicles are a big increase from the 1.8 million electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles registered in Europe at the end of last year, according to the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT).
Countries like France and Slovenia have already set specific end dates for the sale of new combustion cars. At the same time, sales of low-emission vehicles in Europe grows disproportionately and continued again this year by the Coronavirus Pandemic.
According to the EU document, three million public charging stations will be needed in Europe by 2030 to meet the needs of 30 million electric vehicles. There are currently around 200 across Europe.000 charging stations. In addition, the construction of 1000 hydrogen filling stations is planned. Specifically, the paper promises a “roll-out plan with financing options and requirements” for the coming year.
The EU will also propose stricter CO2 emissions standards for cars and vans from 2025 next year. The draft document says these could be extended to buses. The paper goes on to say that European high-speed train services should double by 2030 and triple by 2050 to reduce the continent’s carbon footprint. The EU wants to demand that zero-emission aircraft and ships be ready for the market by 2035.

“EU plans to have 30 million electric vehicles by 2030” – but without plug-in hybrids and without coal-fired power plants.
30 million. divided by 10 years would be 3 million. E-car per year throughout the EU – easily feasible.
If all the “slingshots” (coal-fired power plants) in the east of the EU were to be abolished, which is likely to be politically difficult, and if no more obstacles were placed in the way of “renewables” (especially in Germany), then the EU would really be a pioneer in matters of environmental protection.
