The Euro NCAP auditors gave the Swabian new minivan a bad report. In particular, the testers did not like the behavior of the car in side and pole impacts

S.Bad result for the Mercedes Citan in the Euro NCAP crash test: the small van, which is based on the Renault Kangoo, only achieved three out of five stars when tested according to the guidelines of the European initiative.

As the ADAC reports, the Citan showed major weaknesses, especially in a frontal crash and when hitting a pole. The equipment for active safety also left a lot to be desired: When it came to occupant protection, the crash test experts particularly complained about the hard structures in the dashboard, which pose a high risk of injury to the driver and front passenger in the chest area.

The auditors also missed seat belt reminders for the front passenger and back seat. More serious, however, is that the head airbag caught on the B-pillar in both side and pole impacts. This made it largely useless.

Mercedes refers to the price pressure

And the testers did not like the consequences of a collision with a Citan that threaten pedestrians: They found the front edge and many edge areas of the bonnet to be too dangerous. Apparently only parts of the bumper and rear areas of the bonnet were defused.

The testers were particularly astonished by the fact that the Renault Kangoo, which forms the technical basis of the Mercedes Citan, had already been tested in 2008. However, the previous generation of the current Kangoo, on which the Citan is based, was crashed. At the time, it achieved four stars for occupant and child safety, and only two for pedestrian protection – according to the more lax criteria of the time. There is still no test for the current model.

Most new cars these days achieve a rating of at least four stars. In this price-sensitive segment of commercial vehicles, the customer is usually not willing to pay for more security, so the reaction of Mercedes. It should be considered whether changes should be made to the vehicle based on the test results. This is currently not planned.
